'Ozempic Butt' is everywhere on the internet right now!

As the name suggests, Ozempic butt is related to the popular type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic which has been making lots of buzz since the last few months. Several health agencies and experts have been concerned about the growing popularity of the diabetes drug which is being used by people to lose weight.

What is Ozempic?

For those who are living under a rock, Ozempic is the brand name of the medicine that includes semaglutide which mimics the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that stimulates insulin and suppresses appetite. This injectable drug is available in the market in three doses: 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg. It is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes and to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, or death in adults with type 2 diabetes with known heart disease, the company has said.

3/6

So, what is ozempic butt?

Ozempic butt is a consequence of using the drug. As per reports, it is a public-generated term and has no medical claims to its name. As per reports, it means loosening of the skin of the backside after losing weight due to the administration of ozempic drug. Several people have reported having smaller butts after taking the drug. But the problem begins when the bottom gets saggier.

4/6

Why does it happen?

Ozempic butt is an example of why weight loss should always be healthy instead of drastic. "When weight loss is fast, it can make it tough for your skin to keep up," Gary Goldenberg, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist practicing in New York City told the Prevention. Rapid weight loss does not give time to collagen to adjust to the change and this results in sagging of the skin.

Older people are more likely to develop this

The elasticity of the collagen tends to loosen over time and age. The body's ability to produce new collagen and retain the older ones decreases as one age. Hence, human skin sags as one age. The risk of skin sagging increases when one loses weight at a later age. Apart from the age factor, losing lots of weight all of a sudden might also lead to skin sagging.

Cancer signs: These are the most ignored symptoms

6/6

What are the other possible side effects of using Ozempic?

Ozempic may cause serious side effects, including possible thyroid tumors, including cancer, the company has mentioned on its website. "Do not use Ozempic if you or any of your family have ever had medullary thyroid carcinoma, or if you have an endocrine system condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2),” it warns. It lists the common side effects as nausea, diarrhea, stomach (abdominal) pain, vomiting, and constipation. It can also cause pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas, low blood sugar, allergic reaction, gallbladder problem, and even kidney failure.
