Want to lose weight? These 5 essential blood tests will reveal 'hidden fat loss blockers'

While starting fat loss or fitness journey, it is imperative to understand that apart from diet and exercise being the center of attention, what is going on inside the body is equally essential. What lab tests can reveal can take the outcomes to the next level. Lab values tells one how efficient the metabolism s working and can unveil hidden roadblocks to burning fat. For this reason, here are five essential lab values that one should pay attention to in order to make the fat loss regimen more effective.
Dr. Vassily Eliopoulos, MD from Cornell, explains why these tests are important especially if the matter is of losing weight

2/6

Thyroid function tests: The metabolic gatekeepers

The thyroid gland secretes hormones (T3 and T4) that controls our body's metabolism. They are our body's energy thermostat and imagine if the levels are always low. A low level of thyroid hormone is referred to as hypothyroidism, and it continually reduces the metabolic rate, making fat loss even more difficult. Its symptoms tend to include fatigue, weight gain, and intolerance to cold.
Measuring your thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free T3, and free T4 levels aids physicians in understanding whether your metabolism is slow. Experiments indicate that people with greater free T3 and free T4 levels lose more weight at the beginning and have healthier metabolic rates when dieting. If your thyroid levels are indicative of underactivity, appropriate medical intervention can rectify this and initiate metabolism-based fat loss procedures.

Blood sugar and insulin levels: Fat loss blockers

Glucose and insulin laboratory tests reveal how body metabolises sugar, both elevated fasting glucose or insulin levels indicate insulin resistance, this is a condition where the cells do not actually respond well to insulin, resulting in increased amounts of blood sugar levels and fat storage. It's prevalent among overweight people and can hinder fat loss even after calorie restriction.

Hemoglobin A1c, a measure of average blood glucose over three months, also signifies prediabetes risk. Where these values are elevated, improving insulin sensitivity by diet—consuming low glycemic foods and limiting refined carbohydrates—may increase fat burning effectiveness. Medications enhancing insulin sensitivity can also prove helpful for some under the supervision of a doctor.

4/6

Lipid Profile: Measuring fat in the bloodstream

The lipid panel tests cholesterol and triglycerides, which are indicators of not only of heart health but also of fat metabolism. Increased levels of triglycerides and abnormal cholesterol ratios commonly accompany obesity and metabolic syndrome, dampening fat loss capacity.
Normalizing blood lipid levels with diet, exercise, and sometimes medication (in rare conditions) improves metabolic health to aid in better fat utilization. A healthy lipid profile is a positive indicator that the body is efficiently metabolizing fats and is ready for weight loss.

5/6

Leptin and hormonal balance: The hunger controllers

Leptin is a hormone produced by fat cells that informs the brain that one is full. But leptin resistance develops in many overweight people, in which this message is ignored and leading to hunger and excessive eating.
Although testing for leptin is not a standard routine, savvy practitioners evaluate it in conjunction with other hormones such as cortisol (stress hormone) and reproductive hormones because derangements here can cause fat storage, particularly in the abdominal region. Fixing imbalances in hormones with lifestyle, stress reduction, or can shatter fat loss resistance

6/6

Inflammatory markers: Sneaky weight loss killers

Persistent, sometimes silent, low-grade chronic inflammation disrupts fat metabolism and insulin sensitivity. CRP testing identifies such inflammation. High levels of inflammation are the prevalent markers of obesity and can complicate the fat loss journey. Lowering inflammation with a whole-food diet, regular exercise, proper sleep, can aid the body in burning fat. In the words of Dr. Vass, If fat loss isn't working, it is not your fault, it is just probably the lab tests.
