Weight loss story: German man loses over 159 kg after changing diet and exercising regularly

​Complete lifestyle change for health​

Michael Mehler, a 38-year-old warehouse worker from Velbert, Germany, has shed over 159 kg over a period of three years.



Before his amazing weight loss journey, Mehler couldn’t walk three feet without breaking a sweat, he told news service SWNS. Back then, he used to wear a 10XL shirt size and 74-inch waist pants. However, Mehler was now determined to change his body by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

​Losing 23 kg from bariatric sleeve surgery​

In the beginning of 2020, Mehler weighed more than 263 kilos. He underwent a bariatric sleeve surgery and quickly lost about 23 kg. For the unversed, bariatric sleeve surgery removes a large portion of your stomach, leaving behind a narrow “sleeve,” explains Cleveland Clinic. Reducing your stomach restricts calories and reduces hunger signals.




However, this surgery was just the starting of Mehler’s weight loss journey, which was achieved through a disciplined diet and workout regime.

​Exercise routine​

Mehler started exercising post surgery. He developed a disciplined workout routine in which he did two hours of weight training and two hours of cardio training, six times a week.


"I experienced the most drastic weight loss after changing my diet and working out regularly," he said.

​Changing his diet​

Earlier, Mehler had a very unhealthy diet with high calorie food choices and large portion size. "When I was big, I ate six to eight bread rolls for breakfast with marmalade, Nutella and typically German cold cuts," he said.


To reach his incredible weight loss results, Mehler switched his diet to healthier options. He now eats oatmeal and berries in the morning; rice, chicken and vegetables for lunch; and bread with tuna or salmon and greens for dinner.


It is thanks to his exercise regime and diet plan, along with the initial surgery, that Mehler has successfully lost 159 kg.

​Weight loss secret​

The 38-year-old credits most of his weight loss results to exercise and advises the same for anyone eager to embark on their weight loss journey.


"Plain and simple, you need to start exercising — whatever sport you choose," he said.

​‘No longer depressed’​

Mehler will next be having surgery to remove excess skin on May 15, 2023. "I’m no longer depressed … I feel much more comfortable in my body now," he told SWNS.
