How to lose weight when suffering from Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid is a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough hormones required by the body daily. This disturbance in the level of hormones interferes with the functioning of the organs leading to symptoms like fatigue, increased sensitivity to cold, constipation, dry skin, weight gain and others.

Why Hypothyroidism leads to weight gain?

The butterfly-shaped gland present at the base of your neck produces three main hormones required by the body: Triiodothyronine or T3, Tetraiodothyronine or T4 and Calcitonin. When the gland does not produce these hormones in an adequate amount, your metabolism slows down, leading to weight gain. Putting on some weight is a tell-tale sign of Hypothyroidism. While thyroid medications can help to balance the thyroid level, losing the weight is only possible by exercising and eating right. On the internet, you can find several tips to shed kilos, but not all of them work when it comes to losing weight in the case of hypothyroidism. Here are a few things that might not work.

Cutting down too many calories

Restricting calories is an essential part of any weight loss diet plan. But when it comes to hypothyroidism this trick might not prove to be that efficient. People suffering from thyroid disorder need to engage in metabolism-boosting exercises to burn more calories, reduce blood sugar levels, and balance weight-loss-promoting hormones such as leptin. Due to slow metabolism, these patients already need fewer calories, so cutting it down further might not be ideal. Working out is essential to see any positive results.

Cutting carbs from the diet

A low-carb diet is quite a rage at the current time for shedding kilos and gaining muscles. As carbs do not enjoy a good reputation, people often reduce their intake and fill the void by taking more protein or carbs. However, in the case of hypothyroidism, cutting too much fat from the diet may backfire miserably. Carbs are an essential macronutrient required to balance the thyroid level. So, try to add more complex carbs and fiber on your plate.

Following any diet

The dietary requirement of a thyroid patient is quite different from other people simply trying to shed kilos. So, instead of starting any fancy diet, trending among the masses due to its weight loss benefits, talk to your doctor and make changes to your diet as per your body's requirements. Thyroid patients are required to include several micronutrients in their diet to increase the production of the hormones.

Taking weight loss supplements

Many people trying to shed kilos rely on weight loss supplements as they speed the process. But for thyroid patients getting on any supplements can backfire miserably. Already due to their health condition they need to take thyroid medications on a regular basis, on top of that having weight loss supplements can turn things upside down. Before starting any supplements it is essential to consult the doctor.
