Weight loss journeys are characterized by impeccably planned workout regimes, a well-planned out diet and other little lifestyle changes that have significant benefits for the body. Most people who wish to lose weight tend to cut out carbs, especially limiting the consumption of rice. While most of us have chapatis, a lot of people have rice as their staple diet and cutting them out of everyday meals becomes a challenge for them. It is however, not an issue to worry about. It entirely depends on what kind of rice one is having. White rice is considered to be the least preferable option for those who wish to lose weight. Brown and red are the two varieties of rice that are considered to be healthier alternatives for white rice. Here’s all you need to know about the two varieties so that you can decide which one is better for your consumption.

Brown rice

Brown rice’s germ and bran intact which definitely makes it a better alternative as compared to white rice. It is definitely healthier than white rice. The pigments present in brown rice give it its color. If the amount of this pigment is high, then the color can come out to be red, black or purple, depending on the amount of pigment. It can thus be safely said that red rice is type of brown rice.

Red rice

The presence of the pigment called anthocyanin grants color to the rice and depending upon the amount of this pigment, rice get their color. Red rice and brown rice both, are rich in anthocyanin, which in turn, is a storehouse of anti-oxidants. However, red rice is also rich in manganese which is integral for proper functioning of the body. Manganese plays an important role in the metabolism of carbohydrates and absorption of calcium.

Which one is better?

For those who are looking to lose weight, it would be a difficult decision to choose between the two for both the types contain the same amount of carbohydrates and proteins. The quantity of fiber in both the varieties is also fairly the same and thus both of them are healthy options for weight loss.

What to keep in mind?

It is important to note that even though both the varieties of rice are excellent sources of fiber and are also nutritionally rich with low contents of carbohydrates as compared to white rice, the quantity to be consumed should always be carefully monitored for eating too much of it would inevitably increase the amount of carbohydrate consumed and can be fattening. You can alternate between the two varieties and consume one on each day, while being mindful of the quantity that you’re consuming.
