10 things at home that should always be cleaned inside out

Certain household items harbor hidden grime and allergens that trapping dust or neglecting can compromise health and efficiency. Regularly deep-cleaning these, from appliances to cosy surfaces, keeps your home fresh, hygienic, and functioning at its best.

2/11

Refrigerator (inside & coils)

It’s essential to clean both the interior and external components like condenser coils to prevent food odours, germ buildup, and inefficiency. Dirty coils force the fridge to work harder, which can shorten its lifespan. A monthly wipe-down inside prevents sticky spills, while a yearly coil cleaning reduces energy bills and keeps food fresher for longer.

3/11

Dishwasher (filter, seals & spray arms)

Food particles and soap residue can accumulate in filters, door seals, and spray arms. Monthly or bi-monthly deep cleaning ensures odour-free dishes and smooth operation. Running an empty cycle with vinegar or baking soda also helps dissolve buildup and keeps the dishwasher smelling fresh.

4/11

Oven (interior & racks)

Splashes of greasy food and food that is roasted or grilled in the oven or racks may impact cooking performance and safety. Frequent scrubbing or self-clean feature is a key element in ensuring efficiency and hygiene. A deep clean every few months prevents smoke, odd smells, and keeps baked goods tasting as they should.

5/11

Washing machine (drum, gasket & dispenser)

The inside of the drum, seals and detergent dispenser may accumulate soap scum, mold and residues. Washing vinegar cycles and wiping seals keeps them hygienic, and prevents musty smells. Cleaning the lint filter and leaving the door open after washes also reduces moisture and mold growth.

6/11

Iron (reservoir & soleplate)

Mineral deposits and cloth fabric residue may damage your clothes and also the performance of the iron. Releasing steam in the reservoir and wiping the soleplate with a vinegar solution is enough to restore smooth and efficient ironing. Regular descaling ensures your iron glides effortlessly and doesn’t leave marks on fabrics.

7/11

Mattress (surface & deep clean)

Mattresses harbour sweat, dead skin cells and allergens. To freshen them, you can vacuum clean them, clean up stains and modify them using baking soda at least once every 6 months. Flipping or rotating the mattress periodically also helps maintain firmness and prolongs comfort.

8/11

Ceiling fans & light fixtures

Dust buildup on fan blades and light fixtures can lower air quality and cast dimmer light. Cleaning them with an extendable duster or damp cloth keeps air cleaner and lights brighter. Neglecting them allows dust to spread across rooms and may worsen allergies.

9/11

Window treatments (blinds & curtains)

Blinds and curtains trap dust, allergens, and bacteria, sometimes even more than one realises. Blinds should be wiped regularly; machine-wash curtains when possible for a deeper clean. Fresh curtains also improve indoor air quality and instantly brighten the room’s appearance.

10/11

Microwave (interior & ventilation filters)

Food splatters inside the microwave can breed bacteria. Its grease filters also clog over time, reducing efficiency, both should be cleaned weekly or monthly. Heating a bowl of water with lemon inside helps loosen grime and neutralises odours naturally.

11/11

Trash cans (bins & lids)

Even with liners, spills and odours cling to trash cans. Washing them with disinfectant prevents bacteria, mold, and pests. Allowing them to dry fully in sunlight after washing also eliminates lingering smells and adds an extra layer of freshness.
