For a long time, wallpaper felt like something your grandmother had in her hallway. Heavy florals, dated borders, that specific kind of sticky backing that peeled off in strips and left half the wall looking worse than before. So it made sense that a whole generation of homeowners went running toward plain painted walls and never looked back. But something has shifted and wallpaper has made one of the most convincing comebacks in interior design.
Scroll through any home interiors account right now and you'll see it everywhere. And designers are clearly paying attention to the growing demand, the excitement and the mistakes home owners are making.
“Having helped hundreds of homeowners transform their living spaces all throughout India, I've come across this problem time after time: after spending many hours selecting a beautiful design, the room suddenly becomes even more cramped-looking than when it had no wallpaper at all. Here’s why, and how to change that,” Sidd Panda, Co-Founder & CEO, Magic Decor told Times of India. Panda shares a list of mistakes that home owners make when choosing a wallpaper for their home.
Panda says wall papers on each and every wall is a big mistake owners are making. “While the desire for restraint may be admirable when decorating in a small space, the right pattern can actually do wonders for your room when applied correctly,” he says.
He says while applying an oversize pattern on each wall creates visual clutter, doing so on just one accent wall creates the impression of depth and leads the eye into the room instead of creating visual confusion.
Panda speaks against the choice of dramatic wallpapers that are more in demand these days. He says, deep dramatic wallpapers are not always an idea. “If you paint every wall in a room a color the room is going to look really small. This is because dark colors absorb light and that makes it harder to see in the room. The solution is simple; put dark wallpaper on one wall and a lighter wallpaper/paint color on the other three,” he suggests.
“Horizontal stripes make a room look wider. Vertical stripes make it look taller,” says the expert as he sheds light on one of the most obvious mistakes home owners do. “This is often ignored when choosing wallpaper. This aspect of wallpapering is often forgotten by those who do not know how important it is.If you have a room with low ceilings, pick a vertical pattern to make it feel more open,” he says.
People forget the ceiling and according to the expert the wallpaper should not just stop at the ceiling. “This is like having a wall that is not completely decorated. When you use the wallpaper all the way up, to the cornice line or you use it with a white ceiling and the same skirting you are making a frame for your walls. This frame makes your walls look taller. The wallpaper and the skirting and the ceiling all work together to make your room look nice,” he recommends.
