From strawberries to Lemongrass 5 herbs that you can easily grow in your balcony garden

Sourcing fresh herbs by snipping them straight from the balcony windowsill or popping a homegrown strawberry straight into your mouth is a magical experience in itself.

Zero pesticides, perfect flavor, and that proud gardener glow come with growing these herbs under your care.

These plants grow well in pots and help provide the right nutrients and boost health, be it antioxidants from thyme teas or lemongrass mosquito repellents. No massive plot is needed; a sunny corner suffices.

Here are some herbs that you can grow on your balcony

2/6

Basil

Basil is your kitchen must-have; grow from seeds or store cuttings in well-drained, neutral soil. It requires about 21-32°C warmth and full sun, but take care by regularly pinching off flowers to keep leaves lush longer. Water when the topsoil dries; pair with tomatoes to fend off pests.

3/6

Thyme

Choose edible kinds like French or lemon thyme for fresh sprigs all year. This tough plant handles dry spells and likes loose, well-draining soil (pH 6-8) with plenty of sun at 20-30°C. Water only when the soil is dry; trim often for bushier growth. It tastes great fresh or dried in soups and roasts. As a hardy evergreen, it survives through winter too.

4/6

Mint

Mint spreads fast, so grow it alone in its own pot. Place it in partial shade with moist, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5-7) and temperatures between 13-24°C. Keep the soil damp but not soggy, pinch the top leaves to make it bushier. It's perfect for mojitos, chutneys, or teas, and tons of other uses. Cool nights make flavors pop.

5/6

Lemongrass

Take lemongrass stalks from the grocery store and root them in water first. Then plant in rich, loamy soil that gets 6+ hours of sun and loves humid, hot weather. Its citronella oil naturally repels mosquitoes. This tropical perennial grows well in Indian summers. Just trim and use the outer leaves for curries and soups. It is super low-maintenance for fresh, zesty harvests all season.

6/6

Strawberry

These little space-savers love sunny balconies with acidic soil and 6-10 hours of sun. Grow them in hanging baskets; use slow-release organic fertilizer for big fruit crops. Well-drained pots stop rot. This perennial gives berries year after year.
