How to grow Hibiscus flowers throughout the year

The hibiscus is one of the most decorative flowering plants widely found in household gardens, balconies, and terraces. These attractive tropical plants are great to decorate any outdoor place with color and freshness. However, a typical problem with these flowers is heavy blooming for about two weeks and then a sudden stop of the process. The factors influencing blooming include lighting, watering, pruning, quality of soil, and stresses related to the season. Nevertheless, under proper care conditions, hibiscus will bloom almost throughout the year. Here are the six easy tips to maintain your hibiscus flowering for a longer time.

2/8

Put the plant where it can get sufficient light

A sufficient amount of sunlight stimulates blooming in hibiscus. The ideal daily duration of exposure to sunlight is about five to six hours. Without enough sun rays, the plant will continue growing leaves, but it will not produce many flower buds. Morning light is particularly useful for maintaining good blooming while not overheating the plant. Open places, including balconies and terraces, can serve as the best choice for the hibiscus plant.

3/8

Water the plant with care not to soak the roots

It is crucial to understand that both overwatering and insufficient moisture affect the quality of blooming. Although hibiscus needs slightly wet soil, it cannot have waterlogged soil due to possible appearance of root rot and falling of flower buds. It would be helpful to look at the upper layer of the soil before watering to maintain its optimal condition. Also, good drainage is critical, especially if you keep the plant in a pot.

4/8

Prune the plant to stimulate fresh branches

Regular pruning plays an essential role in the continuous blooming of hibiscus. It involves cutting weak branches, dry stems, and faded flowers. Thus, the plant will devote all its energy to producing fresh branches that usually contain more flower buds. Moreover, moderate and regular pruning improves airflow through and around the bush and makes it easier for the sunlight to penetrate into the inner layers of the plant.

5/8

Provide the plant with the necessary fertilizing

Regular fertilization is necessary for hibiscus because of its frequent blooming. As fertilizers, the plants prefer those that contain potassium and phosphorus, rather than nitrogenous ones. They are especially useful for increasing the number of flowers. Some home gardeners use such organic sources as compost or banana peel fertilizer for encouraging blooming naturally. Regular feeding during growth periods can lead to greater flowering.

6/8

Save the plant from pests and illnesses

Some insects, including aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, and spider mites, often attack the plant and reduce blooming. The symptoms include curling leaves, sticky residue on leaves, and damaged flower buds. Periodic monitoring of pests and treatment of affected areas helps in preventing further damage. Also, some measures, such as improving airflow and ensuring proper lighting, can contribute to better resistance of the plant.

7/8

Re-pot and change the soil periodically

After a period of several years, the plant grows too large for the pot and the soil. This means that roots can no longer absorb nutrients, and drainage of the soil becomes poor. Changing the soil in the pot or repotting in a somewhat bigger pot every two years can be helpful. Proper soil with loose structure and enough nutrients allows the plant to grow better.
