Planning your pregnancy

If you are planning to add a tiny member to your family, it is important that you understand the nitty-gritty details of how your body works. Starting from your menstrual cycle to the time you are most fertile, keeping a tab over the changes your body is going through is actually a good idea when you are trying to get pregnant.

2/12

When are you most likely to get pregnant?

The first step is to track your menstrual cycle. For that, you can either go the old way by keeping tab on your calendar or download any app which lets you easily track your cycle. There are plenty of apps available just a click away, which can help you track your menstrual cycle very accurately.

3/12

Your menstrual cycle

While every woman's menstrual cycle is different and changes from time to time, if you are planning to start a family, it is essential to know when you ovulate.

4/12

What is the best time to get pregnant?

The best time to get pregnant is within a day or two of ovulation.

5/12

What is ovulation?

Ovulation is when an egg (ovum) is released from ovaries. It is a part of a normal menstrual cycle which usually occurs about 14 days before you get your periods.

6/12

How to know when you are ovulating?

If you are trying to conceive, it is advisable that you keep track of your ovulation. While numerous apps can very easily help you track the days, when you are ovulating, there are some tell-tale symptoms of the same:

7/12

Soreness in the breast

Many women experience soreness in their breast or increased tenderness when they are ovulating.

8/12

Increased sex drive

If there is an increase in the urge of getting some action in the bedroom, it may point towards the fact that your ovulation period is going on.

9/12

Change in cervical mucus

The vaginal discharge (mucus) changes in consistency during ovulation. It becomes slippery, stretchy and more watery (a lot like a raw egg white’s consistency). To check your cervical mucus, you need to insert a clean finger inside your vagina, (near the cervix). You can also wipe your vagina with clean tissue/ toiler paper to examine the same.

10/12

Pain in lower back/ stomach

A nagging pain in your abdomen or even lower back, 14 days before your period, can signify ovulation. The pain is usually on one side of your stomach or lower back.

11/12

Your sense of smell increases

A lot of women experience a heightened sense of smell during ovulation. So, don’t mind if you become a super-sniffer during that time of the month.

12/12

The bottom line

While there is no actual guarantee that you will get pregnant by having sex, a day or two leading to ovulation, it surely increases your chances manifold. Your fertility window is actually five days before your ovulation and on the exact day of your ovulation.

Also, keep in mind that if your menstrual cycle is irregular, it may become a tad bit difficult for you to track when you are ovulating, so it is advisable to check for the texture of your vaginal mucus to be sure.
