7 Sleep tips for toddlers during travalling

Traveling with toddlers can be a wonderful experience for parents and their toddlers. However, sleeping can be a big issue for toddlers. Change of environment, sleeping in a different bed, traveling schedule, noise, and the excitement of traveling can all cause a disruption in the sleeping pattern of toddlers. Hence, toddlers wake up cranky and tired the next day. If toddlers do not get enough sleep, it can be a stressful experience for parents as well as their toddlers. Yet, parents can ensure their toddlers get enough sleep even when they are traveling by using a few strategies.

2/8

Maintain the same bedtime routine

Toddlers feel comfortable when they follow familiar routines, especially before bedtime. Even while travelling, parents should try to follow the same bedtime routine they use at home. This could include brushing teeth, changing into pyjamas, reading a short story, or singing a lullaby. Familiar routines signal the child’s brain that it is time to sleep, even in a new place. Keeping the routine consistent helps toddlers adjust quickly and sleep more peacefully during travel.

3/8

Carry their favourite blanket or toy

Toddlers do not like to sleep in a place that is not their home. For toddlers, it can become a problem to sleep at a hotel or at a relative’s place. By carrying their favourite blanket or toys, toddlers can get enough sleep even while traveling. This trick works very well for toddlers.

4/8

Try to match their sleep schedule

While travelling, there are chances that their sleeping schedule might be affected. Parents should try to keep their sleeping time close to their routine. The toddlers wake up late or do not take a nap. They throw tantrums. Overtired toddlers cannot fall asleep. If the sleeping time is maintained close to the routine, the toddlers will keep their body clock aligned.

5/8

Create a comfortable sleep environment

The sleeping environment is important for toddlers. Parents try to keep the sleeping environment dark, quiet, and comfortable for their toddlers. Parents try to keep their toddlers calm. If they are in a noisy environment, they will not be able to fall asleep. Parents try to play soft music for their toddlers. A calm environment will make the toddlers fall asleep quickly.

6/8

Limit screen time before sleep

Parents are often advised to keep their toddlers busy during their travels. They are advised to give mobile phones or tabs to their toddlers. Screen time before sleeping might have a bad impact on toddlers. The light from their mobile phones or tabs might disturb their toddlers. Parents should avoid mobile phone usage at least an hour before sleeping.

7/8

Plan travel around sleep time

It is recommended that, if possible, long car rides or flights be planned during the time when the toddler is sleeping or at bedtime. At times, toddlers are known to easily fall asleep in a moving vehicle, such as a car, bus, or flight. This would ensure that they get enough rest during their travels. Planning a trip according to a toddler’s sleeping schedule would be a great idea for parents.

8/8

Be patient and flexible

After making proper plans, toddlers may face difficulties sleeping in a new place. In this case, parents should be patient rather than getting frustrated. Sometimes, the child may take one or two days to adapt to a new environment. Therefore, parents should be flexible, which will make the toddlers feel secure, thus helping them to fall asleep.
