Eye care shouldn't be neglected

Eye health is crucial for a child’s overall development, yet it is often neglected. Poor nutrition and selective eating habits can contribute to vision problems, making early detection essential. However, some symptoms need to be noted by parents as soon as the child starts showing them. This can help in finding the right treatment or prevention if your child’s eyesight is getting weak.

Symptoms that tell your child's eyesight is getting weak

Parents should be attentive to signs that may indicate underlying eye issues. Frequent eye rubbing or excessive blinking may suggest eye allergies, while squinting or tilting the head can point to refractive errors like myopia. Furthermore, squeezing of eyes and headache can also point towards refractive errors. Additionally, watery or red eyes could signal infections or allergies, while sensitivity to light (photophobia) may be linked to Vitamin A deficiency. Another critical sign is poor night vision, which should never be overlooked.

How to sharpen your child's eyesight?

According to Dr. Mamatha H, Consultant Opthalmologist, Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital, Bengaluru, “To ensure optimal eye health, children require a nutrient-rich diet that includes Vitamins, Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants which are present in carrots, beetroots, spinach, fish, flax seeds, citrus fruits, nuts and others. Additionally, limiting screen time and following the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds) can help reduce eye strain. Encouraging outdoor play, maintaining adequate hydration and sleep, and scheduling regular eye checkups are essential preventive measures. Early intervention and a balanced diet can significantly contribute to preserving children’s vision and preventing long-term eye conditions.”

Check for Vitamin A deficiency

Vitamin A deficiency is a preventable cause of childhood blindness. Vitamin A deficiency affects our eyes and bones as it causes dysregulation of optic nerve functioning, along with other ophthalmic changes, and also bone resorption. Vitamin A deficiency-induced optic neuropathy is a rare cause of blindness.

Dr. Sakshi Lalwani, Paediatric and Neuro Ophthalmologist, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital with Center for Eye Diagnostics and Surgery, Mumbai says, “This is seen in the setting of malnourishment and also when certain restrictive diets are preferred. Vitamin A deficiency-induced optic neuropathy is often associated with bony deformities, and also in autism spectrum disease affected patients. Usually, in vitamin A deficiency, it is more of retinopathy and ocular surface involvement as compared to optic neuropathy.”

At times, there is a multinutrients deficiency along with bony changes. In the literature review, this has been seen that optic neuropathy in vitamin A deficiency is due to nutritional deficiency as well as due to bony compression. All the children or adults who present with such findings must be screened radiologically as well.

Vitamin A deficiency is reversible in most patients when identified and corrected on time. The patient usually presents with a gradual, slow onset of vision loss, there will be a background of poor nutrition or extremely restrictive diet, along with bony deformities. Vitamin A supplements also help to restore some amount of vision in patients with a specific kind of hereditary optic neuropathies.

What is optic neuropathy?

Optic neuropathy is frequently encountered by ophthalmologists all over the world. Optic neuropathy basically means there is vision loss due to diseases affecting the optic nerve.
Optic neuropathy can usually be due to multiple causes. The onset is also dependent upon the aetiology. The way the patient presents to us is either with rapid progressive loss in vision or it is slow onset progressive vision loss. The reason why the optic nerve can get affected is due to infections, inflammation, trauma, toxicity, compression, hereditary, neurological, and infiltrative diseases.
