"I feel lost"

As a 30 year old woman, it broke my heart to see my mother going insane after her mom's death. In the year 2018, my grandmother passed away due to old age. A shy woman, who was widowed 29 years before, my grandmother was always silent and calm. My mother was deeply attached to her though both my mother and her mother had distinct behavioural traits. My mother is not a calm person, forget about being silent! From the day my grandmother died till 6 or 7 months I noticed several changes in my mother. She used to wake up during the night and start calling her mom. She would break down often. She would talk to me about her for hours. I could feel a pain within her. It took me a lot of time to understand that she was a child too, to her mother and now she has been orphaned. We rarely address this emotional pain in our parents when they lose their parents.

Listen to them

They might have stayed away from them for years or might have not had regular communication, the death of parents hits everyone equally and your parents are no exception to this. They might want to speak to you about it, so listen to them. During this crisis all they need is to be heard. Always remember, speaking to someone helps reduce anxiety to a large extent.

Parents too are children of their parents

Always remember that they are children to someone else. Being parents did not stop them from being children. Just as the thought of them leaving you, hurts you terribly, similarly when their parents leave the world they are equally hurt. As kids it is our duty to understand this.

Help them navigate through this loss

Grief over a parent's death can leave an indelible mark on the kids' emotions. If your parents are going through this phase help them navigate through this. Make sure you are there with them whenever they need to be heard. Do not leave them with their grief. Accompany them, sit with them and talk to them. Slowly distract them from the grief and help them get along with their life.

5/6

Forgive them

During this time, they may not have control over their emotions. They might speak to you rudely or might ignore you. Forgive them for this, because they are fight a battle which no one can see. Keep patience because this phase will go away and they will come out of it eventually.

6/6

Share good memories

Happiness kills anxiety. In order to help your parents overcome this stress, share good memories of your grand parents. Avoid any negative talk like family dispute. Talk good things, share funny incidents so that your parents can channelise it in their own memory and recover from the grief.
