Improve your bond with your parents

The emotional health and happiness of you and your family depend on you having a loving relationship with your parents. Here's how to develop a close bond with your parents and why it is important for your well being:

2/8

Communication

Aashmeen Munjaal, Ontologist, mental health and relationship expert says, “The cornerstone of any successful relationship is open and honest communication. Talk to your parents, express your ideas, and pay close attention to what they have to say. Respectfully express your thoughts and worries, and exhort others to do the same.”

3/8

Gratitude journal for your parents

Many times as one ages, the parents and the offspring may have conflicting point of views about dealing with the situation and this may lead to conflict in point of view. It is hereby important for a smooth functioning of the family that they regularly look at the good things that the other individual is providing and doing well rather than what needs to be changed. Being grateful for the good in the relationship, no matter how little is the first step in you developing meaningful and healthy relationships.

4/8

Source Relationship

“It is said that the relationship one has with their biological mother and father has a huge impact on their experiences with the rest of the world. Hence it is imperative one must choose to be thankful for the good in the parents and what they have done, as it is not just being respectful but also highly positively impacts your experience with the world,” says Munjaal.

5/8

Practice Forgiveness

Holding onto grudges or past conflicts can strain relationships. Practice forgiveness and let go of any resentment or bitterness. Remember that nobody is perfect, and forgiveness can help heal wounds and strengthen your bond.

6/8

Surround your home interiors with happy images of your family

According to Munjaal, “Seeing happy pictures of your family acts as a great reminder of the Joyful moments you have spent together and assists you in rekindling with family. You can use pictures of childhood, from a vacation, a celebration.”

7/8

Show Appreciation

Express your gratitude and appreciation for your parents. Acknowledge their efforts, sacrifices, and the love they have shown you. Simple acts of kindness, like saying "thank you" or writing a heartfelt note, can go a long way in nurturing a loving relationship.

8/8

Respect Boundaries

“Respect your parents' boundaries and personal space. Understand that they may have different opinions, beliefs, or ways of doing things. It's important to accept and appreciate their individuality,” advises Munjaal.

Remember, building a loving relationship with your parents is a gradual process that requires effort and understanding from both sides. Be patient, open-minded, and committed to nurturing your relationship, and over time, you can create a stronger and more loving bond.
