Things to keep private

In a world that celebrates being vocal on social media and open communication, it’s easy to forget that some things and topics are better kept private. Psychology suggests that oversharing can make you vulnerable, damage your reputation, or even strain your inter-personal relationships. One should remember that being selective about certain topics isn't about being secretive — it’s about and maintaining healthy boundaries, and protecting your emotional and mental well-being. So, here we list some things one must not discuss with others and why:

2/9

Your financial situation and bank balance

Talking openly about your income, debts, savings, spending habits, or sources of income can unintentionally create discomfort, jealousy, or judgment by others. When one discusses about their money with others, it often triggers feelings of insecurity or competition in others, as per psychology. Remember, not all who are your friends wish well for you. And so, it is wise to keep your financial matters private as it shields you from other's resentment and jealousy.

3/9

Your future plans and dreams

Sharing your ambitions too early can sometimes backfire. It is noted, as per psychology, that talking too much about your dreams or goals before working on them can create a false sense of achievement. This tricks your brain into feeling that you have already achieved it without any real work-- and so it often derails you. Worse, you might even face discouragement or skepticism from others, which can pull you down. So, it's better to keep goals and your next step private until it is achieved.

4/9

The charity you have done

Boasting about your good deeds often diminishes their authenticity. Psychology highlights that true generosity comes from empathy and compassion, not the need for external validation from others. Talking about your acts of kindness or donations and charity might sound as if you are boasting. So, practice humility by keeping your good actions private.

5/9

Your family matters and problems

It is often said, 'don't wash your dirty linen in public' and rightly so! No family is perfect and they all have their share of struggles and problmes. But sharing those intimate details with others can lead to misunderstandings, gossip, and long-lasting damage. Psychology suggests that talking about family issues in public often makes others judgment you and your family as they lack full context. They may also offer biased advice. It can also escalate conflicts within the family itself if private matters become public knowledge. So, keep your family problems private as it shows your respect for everyone involved in it.

6/9

Your resentments and grudges

Holding onto resentment is already toxic to your mental health — but constantly discussing your grudges can double the damage. Psychology shows that repeatedly venting about negative emotions often reinforces anger and bitterness instead of healing them. Worse, sharing your grudges with others can make you seem petty, negative, or untrustworthy. Also, people who pretend to be your friends and well-wishers can use the information against you. Instead, work on processing your emotions privately or with a professional. Let go of the negativity and work on yourself.

7/9

You innermost thoughts and feelings...

Especially when you are upset or angry, as others can take this against you later. It is often better to keep your personal thoughts private and stay silent till you are emotionally calm.

8/9

Unresolved insecurities or weaknesses

Unresolved insecurities or weaknesses are your doubts, fears, or perceived shortcomings that you haven’t fully processed or addressed. These could include feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt about abilities, or emotional vulnerabilities.

Sharing deep insecurities can make you appear less confident and invite unsolicited advice or manipulation. While vulnerability can build trust, it is meant only to be shared with close and trusted ones.

9/9

Your religious and political views

Religion and politics are hard topics that can often lead to debates and disagreements. And so, it is better to either keep your views about it personal or discuss it only with trusted family and friends. Avoid bringing these in casual conversations.
