Who is Canadian PM Mark Carney's wife? Meet Diana Fox Carney, Canada's powerhouse first lady
In March 2025, when Mark Carney became the 24th Prime Minister of Canada, all eyes were on the former central banker–turned -politician. But behind every successful man is a woman. And in Mark’s case, it is his wife, Diana Fox Carney, to whom he has been married for over 30 years. Recently, as Carney grabbed headlines at the World Economic Forum, people grew curious about the woman by his side. Read on to know more about his wife, Diana.
How Canadian PM Mark Carney met Diana Fox Carney
Diana and Mark’s love story began at Oxford University in the early 1990s. Both were stars of the ice hockey club - Diana, a speedy forward famed for “skating rings around opponents” and slicing through defences, and Mark, the team’s joint captain and goalkeeper who led victories over Cambridge in 1993 and 1994. As fate would have it, the duo soon fell in love. Their shared passion for the sport turned teammates into partners for life.
Diana Fox Carney: The economist, author and policy powerhouse
Born in the U.K., Diana’s brainpower shines through multiple Oxford degrees - a Master’s in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, plus Agricultural Economics - capped by a Master’s in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania. She has carved a niche as an expert on developing nations, serving as Vice President at the Canada 2020 think tank (tackling climate, inequality and energy) and Director of Strategy at the Institute for Public Policy Research.
Diana penned two academic books in 1998: Changing Public and Private Roles in Agricultural Service Provision and Natural Resource Management and Institutional Change. Her intellect complements Mark’s, making her a formidable behind-the-scenes influencer in global policy circles.

Diana’s selfless support to Mark
Diana may not be much in the limelight, but her quiet support matters the most to Mark. She was there for both of his swearing-ins - on March 15 and April 28 after the snap polls. A grateful Mark publicly thanked her: “Thank you, Diana, for your work on this campaign… Tonight simply would not have been possible without you.”
