5 stages of a new relationship all married couples miss

The initial stages of a relationship can be a whirlwind of emotions, leaving individuals giddy with joy, nervous with anticipation, and excited about what lies ahead. Married couples often find these stages and the emotions they bring along missing after marriage. Couples who have been together for a long period of time may reminisce these stages and realise their marriage lacks them now.

2/6

The honeymoon stage

This is the stage where everything seems perfect, and both partners feel an intense attraction and connection. It's a time of discovery, excitement, and constant thoughts about each other. While married couples still experience love, the intensity of this initial infatuation tends to mellow over time. The thrill of getting to know someone new and exploring each other's interests and passions is often missed in long-term marriages.

3/6

The early attachment stage

During this stage, both partners begin to develop a strong emotional connection with each other. They experience feelings of warmth, attraction, and a sense of familiarity, often referred to as "chemistry" or "clicking" with one another. When the connection is many years old in marriage, couples tend to miss this 'early attachment stage'. Alongside emotional bonding, there is typically a strong physical attraction between partners in the early attachment stage, which sometimes vanishes with time.

4/6

The intimacy stage

In the intimacy stage, partners feel comfortable being emotionally vulnerable with each other. They share their innermost thoughts, feelings, and fears without fear of judgment, creating a safe space for emotional expression. They communicate with a deep understanding of each other's needs and emotions. However, sometimes married couples don't openly communicate their needs, desires and vulnerabilities with each other with such willingness. Even physical intimacy in this stage is about more than just passion. It includes the expression of love, affection, and a deeper emotional connection during intimate moments which couples find lacking in marriage.

5/6

The effortless and carefree stage

New relationships often have an ease as both partners are exploring emotional and physical aspects of their connection. In marriage, the relationship can sometimes require more effort and communication to maintain. The early stages of a relationship are often characterized by playful banter, surprises, and spontaneous adventures. As a couple settles into marriage, life's demands may make it challenging to maintain the same level of carefree spontaneity.

6/6

The wholehearted love stage

The "wholehearted love" stage in a relationship is a phase where partners experience a profound and unconditional love for each other. It goes beyond infatuation, early attachment, and even the intimacy stage. In this stage, small gestures from your partner can feel incredibly meaningful and special. In long-term marriages, these gestures might still exist, but the novelty and appreciation can fade due to familiarity.
