Red flags you should never ignore on a first date

Let’s be real– first dates can be a whirlwind of butterflies, awkward laughs, and that little hope that the person across from you might just be someone special. While you’re busy checking for chemistry or bonding over favourite shows, there’s something even more crucial to notice: red flags.

It might sound dramatic, but first dates often reveal more than you think– if you’re paying attention. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye out for warning signs, no matter how attractive they are, how smooth the conversation flows, or how much you’re rooting for it to work.

Here are 7 red flags you should never ignore on a first date.

2/8

They’re rude to the waiter, host, or anyone else

This one’s a classic– and for a reason. If your date is rolling their eyes at the server, snapping their fingers for attention, or acting like they’re better than everyone else. You might think, “Well, they’re being nice to me.” Sure– but that’s because they’re trying to impress you.

How someone treats people they don’t need to impress says a lot more about who they really are. Keep an eye out for talking down to staff, skipping “please” or “thank you,” or complaining in a mean or entitled way. If they lack basic kindness, don’t expect them to suddenly become respectful later.

3/8

They only talk about themselves

We get it– people can be nervous on first dates, and a little rambling is normal. But if the entire conversation revolves around them– their job, their car, their ex, their gym routine– you might just be a background character in their story. If they aren’t asking about you or showing genuine interest in who you are, that’s a red flag.

Ask yourself: Did they ask anything about my life? Did they actually listen, or just wait for their turn to talk? Relationships are a two-way street, and if it already feels one-sided, it’s perfectly okay to move on.

4/8

They make you feel uncomfortable– even just a little

Okay, this one’s important. Sometimes a red flag isn’t loud or obvious– it’s just a feeling that something feels off. Maybe they made a sexual joke too soon, sat way too close too fast, ignored your body language, or asked overly personal questions.

Even if you can’t explain why you feel uneasy, listen to that feeling. You don’t owe anyone a second date– or even an explanation. Your comfort matters, so trust your gut– it’s usually smarter than you think.

5/8

They trash their ex or talk about them too much

Talking about past relationships isn’t always bad– it’s normal to mention your dating history casually. But if your date spends most of the evening ranting about how “crazy” their ex was, blaming their ex for everything, or still seems emotionally tangled in the past, that’s a red flag.

Someone who constantly blames others might not take responsibility for their actions, and someone still hung up on an ex may not be ready for something new. Let them work that out on their own time.

6/8

They push your boundaries– even in small ways

This doesn’t have to be huge or dramatic. But if they try to pressure you into another drink when you say no, guilt-trip you about leaving early, or touch you in ways you didn’t invite, those are signs they don’t respect boundaries. If they can’t respect a small “no,” they probably won’t respect bigger ones later. A healthy relationship starts with mutual respect. Period.

7/8

You catch them in little lies or weird inconsistencies

Maybe they said they don’t use Instagram but mention posting something recently, or claim to be close with family but haven’t spoken in years. Little lies early on can grow into bigger ones later. You don’t need to play detective, but honesty on a first date matters more than perfection. If someone’s already being shady, building trust with them will be tough.

8/8

You leave the date feeling… off

This one’s simple but powerful. After the date, do you feel excited, curious, or light? Or do you feel anxious, drained, confused, or even a little sad? Sometimes it’s not about what they did or said– it’s the energy they leave you with. You deserve to walk away thinking, “Wow, that felt good,” not, “Ugh… something felt weird.” Don’t ignore your feelings– they’re there to guide you.
