Can you relate to this issue?

Her story: I was happily dating my current boyfriend of 2 years until my ex contacted me again. He and I had broken up because at that time he and I wanted different things in life. He wanted to first make money and then marry but I wanted to get married and then grow together. My current partner is an amazing person. He has given me his 100 % and I know I should not have any room for my ex in mind or heart. However, my ex and I had been together for more than 6 years since the end of school. My ex has come back into the picture, is well settled, and now wants me to come back to him. I am torn between the two men and I don’t know how to gain clarity. Please help me see the bigger picture and solve my dilemma.

His story: I cannot lose her but can see her confused. Should I let her go? Should I take her back if she realises her mistake i.e. the case? I have given her a lot of emotional power over me and it hurts to see what is happening. She was honest enough to come and tell me about her dilemma and I appreciate that but it has given me sleepless nights. What should I do?

Response by Vishal Bhardwaj, Founder, and Relationship Coach at Predictions for Success

Relationships and love can take us on unexpected adventures, and occasionally, we find ourselves at a crossroads, divided between the past and the present. Selecting between a current lover and an ex-partner is a difficult and highly emotional decision. In this situation, both parties must manage their emotions, give their health first priority, and have honest conversations to reach a decision that supports their happiness and long-term objectives.

For Her

Occasionally, the past interrupts our bliss in the present. I can see that you are in a difficult situation and want what's best for you. Consider your priorities and values after taking a step back. Think about whether your ex's recent effort to get back at you is a sincere attempt at alignment or if it's just a temporary tactic. In a long-term relationship, consider what is most important to you. Once you get an insight about your own goals and feelings, talk honestly with your former boyfriend as well as your present one.

Talk to your existing partner about your feelings, worries, and doubts to build a better understanding of one another's viewpoints. When handling difficult emotional situations, honesty is essential. Also, think about the nature of your interactions with the two men. Evaluate each relationship's degree of compatibility, emotional support, and trust. Consider whether your ex's return is a result of true love or a wish to go back in time.

Do not hurry your decision and give some time to yourself to think and analyse your feelings. If you still can’t find the answer, seeking advice from a family member, friend, or relationship counsellor might offer insightful external viewpoints. A third party who is impartial can assist you in gaining an understanding of your feelings and guiding you toward a choice that will contribute to your long-term happiness.

For Him

Sometimes circumstances in life force us to choose between hanging onto a partner or letting go of them in order to ensure their happiness. In your situation, you have been dating for quite some time now and her ex has come back now. As you mentioned, you cannot lose her and you see that she is confused. You are now confused about whether to let her go or put effort into holding the relationship. In this situation, you need to put your emotional health first. While love frequently demands compromise and sacrifice, your mental and emotional well-being shouldn't be sacrificed for it. If her indecisiveness keeps you up at night, it might be time to reconsider whether the relationship is still viable.

First, you need to talk to your lover honestly and openly. Don't hesitate to voice your worries or feelings without giving blame. To make wise decisions regarding the future of your relationship, you must comprehend her point of view. Also, set healthy boundaries in your relationship.

Tell your girlfriend exactly what you need from the relationship and what will happen if your demands are not met. Keeping your mental health requires that you set limits. Once you know her point of view, determine whether the relationship is in line with your values and long-term objectives. Also, be cautious and examine whether her lack of decision is a sign of more serious compatibility problems. You can seek assistance from an expert counselor if you are unable to handle it on your own. While Love is essential, a healthy relationship is based on true values and principles.
