What is negging?

Negging is the ability to criticize someone by complimenting or insulting them. The person who negges their partner does it with the sole aim of controlling and undermining them. Their partner also ends up desiring their approval and depends on them to feel better. This emotional manipulation can be pretty dangerous for your emotions and mind, because it can leave you completely distraught, insecure and anxious. Here are some signs that’ll help you identify if your partner is negging you.

2/6

Backhanded compliments

If your partner gives you backhanded compliments like, “thank your stars that you have me, or you wouldn’t have gotten anybody good” or “you actually are nice, as I didn’t think you were” can honestly feel insulting.

3/6

Insults

If your partner has no problem insulting you, then they are clearly negging you. They might also disguise their insults as questions and make you think if you have a problem within yourself. They will make you feel super conscious.

4/6

Criticism

Sometimes, people who indulge in negging, openly criticize you. Instead of making positive criticism, these people will harshly criticize you, in a negative way to make you feel worse. They might even make fun of you, by commenting on your looks, personality, ambitions etc.

5/6

Comparisons

They won’t stop at comparing you with other people, even though they are aware it will make you feel super gloomy and insecure. You shouldn’t have to compare yourself with anyone else. Nor should your partner.

6/6

Manipulation

Manipulating somebody to be part of a relationship is no way to move ahead. This is also a sign of negging. It is one of the unhealthiest forms of communication in a relationship that no partner should resort to.
