Black cats are a huge no-no in most Indian households. As per popular belief, if a black cat crosses your path, it attracts bad luck, negativity and well, you are “doomed”. However, you may be surprised to know that in many other popular cultures, black cats are considered auspicious, bringers of fertility, love and prosperity. Don’t believe us? As per superstitions popular in the UK, gifting a black cat to the bride on her wedding day is meant to bring good luck. If newlyweds have a cat in their home, it is said to ward off evil and did you know that the black colour of the cat is believed to be a lucky colour there?

In Japan, black or pure white cats are believed to bring prosperity and good luck to their homes. It is also said that according to the Japanese, black cats ward off evil and stalkers!

Here black cats are called matagots and as per the superstitious beliefs in France, if you feed a black cat properly, it brings good luck.

The Scottish have an interesting belief that if an unknown cat, black or any colour, enters your home, it is a sign that wealth will soon knock your doors.

Norway

Norwegian mythology says that black cats are symbols of love and they enhance fertility. The reason is that black cats were the pullers of the Goddess of love and fertility, Freyja’s chariot.

In Egypt, black cats were worshipped like Gods. They were loved for being graceful, affectionate and intelligent. In fact, if a black cat in the family passed away, the entire family would go into mourning.
