Commitment phobia

Commitment phobia, also known as the fear of commitment or relationship anxiety, is a common issue that can affect various aspects of life. People with commitment phobia are often seen displaying behaviours like avoiding discussions about the future, always seeking the “perfect” partner without committing, maintaining emotional distance in relationships, and struggling to be vulnerable. People with relationship anxiety often self-sabotage their relationships by avoiding emotional intimacy and trust, which leads to a lack of commitment and a habit to jump from partner to partner. Such people may also fear losing their freedom and independence in a committed relationship, which causes them to push away partners who demand commitment. To cope, some people with commitment phobia seek validation by getting into multiple casual relationships, which help them find temporary relief from their anxiety.

As a partner of someone with commitment phobia, it’s important to know the root cause of these behaviours and deal with empathy and communication. Let’s take a closer look at why some people are commitment phobic, how to identify these behaviours and how to effectively deal with them.

2/6

Fear of vulnerability

Some people are afraid of being vulnerable and opening up emotionally in a committed relationship. This fear can be a cause of having experienced rejection or hurt in their past, which is why they are now scared to expose themselves to the thought of pain. As a partner of someone experiencing this, you can help them by creating a safe and supportive environment where they can feel comfortable expressing their feelings and emotions, and reassure them that they won't be judged for doing so. You can also try to gain their trust by expressing your own vulnerability to show that you trust them too and it’s absolutely fine to be open and honest in a relationship.

 Attachment issues

People with commitment phobia may also suffer from attachment issues, which makes it difficult for them to build a sense of security and long-lasting bonds with others. This can be a cause of childhood experiences like inconsistent care and love or other traumatic experiences, which may impact their ability to trust and connect with their partners. For example, if a person experienced abandonment from a close person or felt neglected while growing up, they may struggle to develop trust and a sense of security and stability in their relationships. It is essential to deal with such people with empathy. Try to understand their feelings and attachment issues by putting in effort and giving them proper time and attention. Through essential work, communication, and help, they may overcome their issues.

4/6

 Low self-esteem

People with low self-esteem may doubt their worthiness of love and be scared of being rejected and abandoned in a committed relationship. They may fear failure and messing up in their relationship, leading them to push their partner away. To help and deal with a person facing this, encourage them to engage in activities of self-care and self-love, such as mindfulness practices, therapy, working out, and pursuing their interests. It may help them boost their confidence and overcome their insecurities and low self-esteem. Make sure to show them unconditional love and acceptance to make them feel more secure and comfortable in the relationship.

5/6

Fear of losing independence

Many people who are afraid of commitment often worry that committing to a relationship means they’ll lose their freedom and independence, which can make them anxious and scared. To help your partner with this fear, try to create an environment that highlights the positive sides of commitment while respecting their need for independence. Prioritize building the relationship based on mutual trust, understanding, and establishing healthy boundaries. Embrace communication about the importance of personal space and freedom, trying to find a balance that respects both perspectives.

6/6

 Past trauma or heartbreak

Past traumas, such as painful emotional experiences and heartbreak in previous relationships, are often the main reasons for fear of commitment and lack of emotional investment. To effectively deal with this issue, it is important to be patient, understanding, and attentive to the triggers of your partner and the fear and insecurities it causes. Provide them with consistent reassurance and support, letting your actions show that you are different from their past relationships. Allow them to have enough time and space to heal from their past wounds.
