Why do people kiss under the mistletoe on Christmas?

Kissing under the mistletoe is a very famous Christmas tradition that signifies love and romance. This beautiful tradition reminds us of the spontaneity in relationships, amidst the busy hustle and bustle in life. When two people with a possible romance, find themselves under the mistletoe, they ought to kiss once. Sounds interesting? Let’s get into the depths of this tradition.

Mistletoe is a plant that is found growing on fruit trees, maples, oaks etc. These plants are said to have yellow flowers, white berries and large clusters of mistletoe. However, as romantic as the tradition sounds, mistletoe acts as a parasite to its host tree and sucks out all the nutrients for itself. Quite the contrary right?

According to a Norse legend, the goddess of love, Frigga had birthed a son, Balder who was the god of innocence and light. And so, Frigga declared that no creature should harm him in any way. However, having forgotten to include mistletoe, Loki learned of this and aimed for Balder’s heart with an arrow made from mistletoe. He then tricked Balder’s blind brother into shooting him. With grief, Frigga’s tears fell on mistletoe, forming the white berries. And since then she declared that everyone will have to make peace and have a kiss when under the mistletoe plant, even if it is enemies.

According to folklore, single women should hang balls made of mistletoe on their doorways to attract suitable suitors. A woman caught under a mistletoe can’t refuse a kiss.

Mistletoe is also said to signify overcoming difficulties during adverse times. Hanging mistletoe on the doorways are another good sign of letting in happiness and good energy into the house.

Now isn’t standing under the mistletoe fun? But be cautious, because mistletoe berries can be very poisonous if eaten. Children and pets should be kept away from it.
