Things to know before getting a home aquarium

Keeping a freshwater aquarium at home with vibrant fishes is not only a responsible task, but also quite rewarding. Setting up an aquarium at home can be a fun and rewarding hobby. It adds beauty to your space and creates a peaceful and calm environment. However, it’s not as easy as just filling a tank with water and adding fish. Instead, there are a few important steps one needs to follow to ensure the well-being of your aquatic pets. Here we list some such important things to know before getting an aquarium at home:

2/6

Choose the right tank size

While you might have seen fishes being kept in bowls in pop-culture, but it isn't an ideal or sustainable practice. Instead, when it comes to keeping fishes as pets, bigger aquariums are also better and more preferable. A larger tank is easier to maintain, has more stable water parameters, and offers enough space for fishes to swim freely, hide, and feel safe. On the contrary, small tanks are more prone to quick changes in water quality, temperature, and pH-- all of which can stress or harm your fish. For beginners, a long tank with 40 litre capacity is a good starting point.

3/6

Choosing the right fish for your tank

Many times, the fishes that are sold at pet stores are in their juvenile stage and by the time they become an adult, they grow over twice their size. And so, one should research well about the fish species they would like to keep in home aquarius before buying them, as overcrowding can lead to aggression and health problems.

4/6

If keeping different types of fishes, choose the right species

If you plan to keep fishes of different species then do check their temperaments and compatibility. Some fishes are too aggressive or territorial to be housed with others. A general rule is that fishes of similar size and nature should be kept together. If a fish is small enough to fit in another fish's mouth, chances are that it could be eaten by the latter!
Also, fishes that have similar diet, temperature, and other needs should be kept together in a community tank-- as this is easier.
So, research well before stocking your home aquarium.

5/6

Let the tank cycle before adding fish

One of the most common mistakes is adding fish immediately after setting up a tank. Before introducing fish, the aquarium needs to go through a nitrogen cycle— a process where beneficial bacteria break down fish waste into less harmful substances. This usually takes 2–4 weeks. During this time, monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels in the aquarium water using test kits. Adding fish too early in a new aquarium can lead to “new tank syndrome,” which may harm or even kill your fish. So, be patient and let nature do its work.

6/6

Regularly maintaining the tank is a must

An aquarium requires consistent care— not just feeding the fish. Perform weekly water changes (about 20–25%), clean algae buildup, check filter performance, and monitor water parameters and ensure they are in the safe zone. Skipping these steps can cause ammonia or nitrite spikes, leading to fishes getting sick or even dying. Invest in a basic aquarium maintenance kit, including a siphon, test strips, and algae scraper. With regular upkeep, your tank stays beautiful, and your fish live long, healthy lives. A little effort each week goes a long way in preventing bigger problems later on.
