How to take care of your golden retriever pup

Golden retrievers are adorable and no one can counter that fact. They are superb with kids and very much compatible with other pets in the house. They are big and their tail is strong, so keep your breakable belongings away from the reach of that helicopter wag. They are great personalities for a pet but maintaining them is no joke. So, we bring to you a basic guide, which will make your and your pet’s life easier. Bookmark this page which lists down cool tips to take care of a Golden Retriever.

2/8

Brush the dog’s coat daily

These pups shed a lot and they have beautiful wavy or straight, long coats. To prevent it from matting and to reduce the shedding, you must brush it daily. If you do this from an early age, they get used to it and they actually look forward to it. Not only that. While you brush them, watch out for scabs, cysts, scratches and bumps and if it does not go in a day or two, visit the vet.

3/8

Clean the ears

Clean your dog’s ears but do not use cotton swabs. Wrap some wet cotton gauze around your finger and then wipe the inside of your puppy's ears and ear flap. Do it every alternate day and if you notice wax buildup or discharge or foul smell, take it to the vet, do not delay.

4/8

Trim the nails

They may hate it, but you have to keep them trimmed. When their nails start clicking the ground, it is a sign that your boy or girl needs trimming. You may need to trim more often if he/she does not get enough exercise. Active dogs need fewer trims as per vets. While trimming, avoid the quick, a blood vessel present in your dog’s nail. It can bleed and it is very painful too. Also, do not cut the nail in one go. Go slow and if you see a circle on the trimmed surface, stop there and then because that is the quick.

5/8

Brush their teeth

Brush them regularly and inspect their mouth with all your attention. Never use a human toothpaste because they are very toxic for dogs.

6/8

Make them workout

Regular exercise is a must for all animals and humans. Make sure that your fur-child goes on a brisk walk, plays around at least for 30 minutes twice a day. Play fetch, take it for a swim if he loves water.

7/8

Train them with love

It is important to train your dog but make sure you do not use a stick as a weapon. Create a dog’s den, make him/her realise that it is their room or space. They must have a place to retreat if they feel low or nervous. But never make it an area of punishment as that will stress them out. Teach them basic commands.

8/8

Make them socialise

Take them to a dog park, make them meet other pets and have some level of interaction. Nowadays, we also have pet friendly cafes, so take them there. Not just pets, dogs should also know other humans besides you. They must know that people wearing attires unlike yours are also humans they need to be civil with. Do take them to crowded places to take away that fear and so that they get accustomed to loud noises as well. Fast cars and bikes, all these things scare them if they are not used to it. It is the same as human babies.
