Top 10 Betta fish varieties

Betta fish are one of the most popular pet fish breeds in the world. Also called the Siamese fighting fish, Betta fish are known for their iconic long and flowy fins and vibrant colours that add a touch of beauty and elegance to aquariums. Though small in size (around 2-2.5 inches), Bettas are full of personality and they can turn any tank into a living piece of art. These are freshwater aquarium fish, omnivores, and easy to care for, which makes them ideal for beginners too. But, did you know that there are different varieties of Betta fish based on their dramatic tail shapes? Here we list some of them:

2/11

Veiltail Betta

The Veiltail Betta is the most common and widely available Betta variety. It features a long, flowing tail that droops gracefully, creating a striking display of movement in the water. This variety comes in an array of colours, including red, blue, and multicolored combinations, making it a versatile choice for aquariums. Veiltails are also affordable and easy to find in pet stores.

3/11

Crowntail Betta

As the name suggests, the Crowntail Betta is instantly recognisable due to its spiky, crown-like fins. Its tail rays extend beyond the fin webbing, creating a dramatic, almost flame-like appearance. These fish are available in many bold colours like royal blue, scarlet red, and iridescent green. However, as per some reports, their unique fin structure makes Crowntail Betta slightly more delicate than others.

4/11

Halfmoon Betta

The Halfmoon Betta's tail spread into a perfect 180-degree semicircle which looks like a half-moon. These fish come in a variety of colours like turquoise, violet, and metallics. If you’re looking for a showstopper Betta for your aquarium, then the Halfmoon is an great choice.

5/11

Plakat Betta

Unlike the long-finned varieties, Plakat Bettas have short, sturdy fins which gives them a distinct look. Their short tails also makes them better and strong swimmers, as compared to other varieties. Their compact, muscular appearance adds to their charm, while their vibrant colours make them look attractive.

6/11

Doubletail Betta

The Doubletail Betta have a distinctive split tail fin, which makes it look as if they have two flowing tails instead of just one-- and hence their name. This unique tail feature also gives them a fuller, more dramatic look in the aquarium. Doubletails also often have broader dorsal fins, enhancing their balance and symmetry.

7/11

Rosetail Betta

The Rosetail Betta is a variety of the Halfmoon Betta fish. They have with extra branching in their tail and fins, which gives them a ruffled, rose-petal effect-- and so, they are names Rosetail Betta. When flaring, their fins appear like a blossoming flower, making them look stunning. However, because of their excessive finage they are more delicate and prone to health issues if not properly cared for.

8/11

Delta Tail Betta

Delta Tail Bettas have triangular-shaped tails that spread out like the Greek letter delta (Δ), and hence these fish are named so. Their smooth symmetry and flowing movement make them visually stunning without being as delicate as some other varieties.

9/11

Elephant Ear (Dumbo) Betta

The Elephant Ear, also called Dumbo Betta, are famous for their oversized pectoral fins that look like elephant ears. These fins give them a unique and charming look. Elephant Ear (Dumbo) Betta come in both soft pastel colours and bold shades. For the unversed, this Betta variety is among the most unique varieties.

10/11

Spadetail Betta

Just like the Delta Tail Betta, the Spadetail Betta have spade-shaped tails— which are broad at the base and tapering to a point, and so they are called so. The Spadetail Betta is a less common variety and they are often prized for their balance of beauty and strength, as their fins are not as prone to damage.

11/11

Marble Betta

As the name suggests, Marble Betta are known for their constantly changing patterns. They can shift colours throughout their lives, often transforming dramatically! Their stunning mix of colours — from blues and whites to pinks and blacks — makes them unpredictable and endlessly fascinating for aquarists.
