What would you do if your partner had a fling?

Would you be able to forgive and move on? Or would it spell the end of your marriage? Read these steps suggested by well-known columnist and author VINITA DAWRA NANGIA before you answer!

People react differently under the stress of an intimate betrayal – and I am not distinguishing between emotional or sexual affairs, since both betray and hurt equally. There are some steps you must take to maintain your dignity and salvage your relationship. Not every confrontation means the ends of the relationship, but it may lead to it.

What would you do if your partner had a fling?

IS IT WORTH FIGHTING FOR?

Take an objective look at your life together. Have you been happy and satisfied mostly? If the answer is yes, this relationship is worth fighting for in an intelligent, studied manner. If no, consider if you would like to use the opportunity to bail out? Do not make the affair the sole reason for walking out of your marriage.

DO NOT THREATEN. DO NOT BEG!

Do not demean yourself by groveling to your partner or worse, by approaching his/her love interest to beg, blackmail or threaten! It is critical to maintain your dignity and to keep yourself positive and looking good. Remember, people respond better to the responsibility card, rather than the morality one. Stay in command; do not portray yourself as an object of pity. You wish to stay attractive to your partner; not drive him/her away further.

IT NEED NOT BE THE END!

Though it may seem so initially, not every affair spells the end of your relationship. Research shows that just about 3-4 per cent affairs result in marriage. Around 20 per cent affairs last less than two months, while 50 per cent have a life of around a year; 30 per cent last more, but seldom beyond four years. So, take heart and have patience.

TAKE TIME OFF!

Do not react immediately. Take time to think this through. Because once you confront your partner, you can’t look back. If your spouse has been tethering on the brink, the ensuing unpleasantness may provide the excuse to walk out! And if s/he is responsible enough to give up the affair, it may still shame them enough to cause a deep rift in your relationship.

What would you do if your partner had a fling?

TAKE A CONSIDERED DECISION!

Know yourself. Before demanding the truth, you must know how much are you willing to accept/tolerate. Are you OK with your partner having a one-night stand? Would you rather he/she is emotionally involved with another and hasn’t had a physical relationship? Are you willing to be second best for however long this lasts?

What would you do if your partner had a fling?

TAKE A REALITY CHECK!

Are you in a position to live by yourself, or cannot possibly imagine living without your partner? Men get used to home comforts provided by a wife; wives get used to the financial security a husband provides. However crass this may sound, the financial and comfort angle is a strong factor in deciding whether you wish to forgive or not.

What would you do if your partner had a fling?

DO NOT BE RIGIDLY UNFORGIVING!

Don’t demand immediate solutions; give your partner a fair chance to think through and decide; do not threaten or close all doors. Seeking professional help is a good option. Lastly, remember we are all equally susceptible; these things happen. Nobody really belongs to us. We change, emotions shift and settle. Be large hearted enough to forgive and move on in case your mate is willing to meet you half way. It could be you who errs tomorrow!
