How to deal with a boss with temper issues

Here's how you can deal with your boss

They get angry, humiliate you, make you even cry perhaps! Angry bosses can ruin your day or time in office and sometimes you just want to give up. This is when you use these tips that can help you deal with a boss who has major temper issues and gets too aggressive bordering on unprofessional behaviour.

2/6

Don’t retaliate or acknowledge

Most employees tend to retaliate when our bosses lose it and say nasty things to us. Sometimes their anger is justified but at times it gets a little too much and humiliates us in front of the entire office. But instead of defending yourself, listen to your boss as that would be a wiser choice. When you too speak up, it will just aggravate the situation. Let him or her vent out and you must acknowledge that you are listening.

3/6

Repeat your boss’ words

Not sarcastically but in a genuine tone, say what you learnt from your boss. You must show that you were listening. Don’t repeat the negative words, just correct what you were being accused of as if you learnt your lesson and that it will not happen again. And in addition, lightly describe their aggressive body language like them gritting their teeth, red face or the fist maybe, so that they know where they crossed the limit and what was too aggressive, this will alert them to their unprofessional behaviour.

4/6

Apologize

You may not feel like doing it but sometimes it is necessary to apologise in certain circumstances. Own up to your mistakes and say sorry. Even if you think that the apology is unwarranted, it is to your benefit that you apologise. When you say the magical words, it simply slows down your boss’ anger and you can move forward with your conversation.

5/6

Ask what you can do

A way forward is by asking your boss what you can do to rectify your mistake and change the negative atmosphere in the workspace. Go to him or her with solutions. When bosses are angry, they rarely have a solution. So it is best to channel your wits and make them work.

6/6

Go to the HR

This is a step that must be acted on only when it gets too much and you know you are being picked on. If your boss gets too personal, it makes your existence in the office very difficult. Instead of just quitting your job, let the HR know what is happening. This way maybe you can save others that come after you. Plus, it takes away your frustration.
