How to handle criticism wisely

Nobody likes hearing "you could do better," especially when it stings. Criticism often triggers our defences, but reacting with anger pushes people away and blocks one's personal growth. So, here we list some smart strategies to transform criticism from a personal attack to opportunities for growth:

2/6

Understand if it's destructive or constructive criticism

Pause and listen. Destructive criticism attacks one's character - ignore and dismiss it calmly. While, constructive feedback targets actions for growth. Give yourself some time to listen and process what is being said. Write the critique down, make actionable points, ignore personal jabs. This will help you take filter out constructive criticism, implement them, and grow as a person.

3/6

Know their intentions

We often dismiss critics we dislike, and can skip the truth and growth in the process. So, detach the person from what is being said. Sometimes, a grumpy boss might given a golden piece of advice which is masked as criticism. So, the next time your rival critiques, listen to them twice as hard - you might thank them later.

4/6

Ask questions

Defensiveness kills conversations, while curiosity builds bridges. Do not get defensive on being criticised. Instead, ask curious questions like: "Can you give an example?" or "Please help me understand..." Such a response shows your maturity and shifts the conversation from blame game to finding solution to the problem.

5/6

Detach from criticism

One critique doesn't define your entire worth. Performance gaps and mistakes are fixable; your core competence endures.

6/6

Never take it personally

Destructive critics reveal more about themselves than you. Their anger, sarcasm, meanness? That's their baggage. Protect your self-image - their words don't define your value. True confidence ignores noise, absorbs signal, and keeps moving forward unshakeable.
