Body language signs of someone who is being fake

While we meet many people who claim to be our well-wishers, but not all are genuinely being nice or real. And sometimes, we can sense that someone is not being being real— but can’t quite put our finger on it. It is often said that one's body language often speaks volumes than their words, and rightly so. When applied on fake people, it can be seen that while they might say all the right things, but their non-verbal cues can give them away. So, here we list some subtle signs backed by psychology that can help you spot insincerity in everyday conversations:

2/6

Their smile doesn’t reach their eyes

When a person is genuinely happy and smiling, their eyes are relaxed and light up too. But, when someone is pretending to smile, their eyes lack emotions-- and this is a big indicator of a fake smile. The cheeks don’t raise, and there are no crow’s feet near the eyes in a forced smile. It often feels more like a performance than an expression of joy, and if you notice this is people it shows that something is off with them.

3/6

They either overdo eye contact or completely avoid it

Eye contact says a lot about trust and honesty. But someone who’s faking sincerity might not get it quite right. They could either stare too intensely—trying too hard to appear confident—or avoid eye contact altogether, which can signal discomfort or dishonesty. Psychology suggests that too much eye contact can feel manipulative, while none at all can make you feel disconnected. The key is balance. If their gaze feels unnatural, forced, or inconsistent, it might be their way of covering up how they really feel.

4/6

Their expressions and words don't match

When someone says, “I’m so happy for you,” but their facial expressions or eyes says otherwise— then it is a big red flag. Genuine emotions are reflected in the face automatically and match with one's words. Fake people may show mismatched expressions-- like they'll smile while speaking of a bad news, or they'll be expressionless while congratulating you. This is a huge indicator that their actions and words don't match and shows that they are faking things.

5/6

Their gestures don't match or are too dramatic

Have you ever noticed when someone is being too nice to you for no reason? authentic gestures feel natural— they support what we’re saying and happen in rhythm with our words. But when someone is being fake, their body movements don't match their words and it might feel off. They may use exaggerated gestures to cover up their discomfort or delay movements, and this is a huge indicator of them being fake.

6/6

They mirror you too much

People often mirroring or subtly copy your gestures, tone, or posture when they like you and it’s often a natural way of bonding. But when someone does it too much-- it can be a sign of being manipulative. Fake people might consciously mirror you to appear more likable or to gain your trust, but it can come across as forced. It might feel like they’re too much like you, and too soon.Pay attention if you notice them copying your movements a little too closely— it might not be genuine connection, but calculated imitation.
