Respect in inter-personal relationships

It is often said that communication is the key for any relationship to thrive-- be it personal or professional. But if it isn't respectful, then there's no way the relationship could stand the test of time. If you find someone talking down to you, then here we list some ways to set verbal boundaries and command respect, in a professional manner.

2/6

"Let's come back to this when the tone is more respectful"

This is a direct and clear way of saying that you don't talk to people who speak disrespectfully to you. It also gives people a hint to fix their tone before talking to you, as you have set a boundary that you won't accept such bad behaviour.

3/6

“Can you clarify what you meant by that?”

Responding with a question like, “Can you clarify what you meant by that?” is a psychologically smart move. It forces the other person to reflect on what they just said and how it sounded. Sometimes, people don’t realize how disrespectful they’re being until you calmly point it out. This tactic keeps the conversation civil while subtly holding them accountable. It also gives them an opportunity to rephrase or soften their words.

4/6

"I'm open to talk when you are less emotional"

This is a polite way of telling someone to calm down, gather their thoughts, and speak to you in a respectful and logical manner. Remember, communication should be a two-way route and respectful; only then can healthy discussions can be had.

5/6

"I don't respond to this attitude"

This is a direct way to tell others that you don't talk to people who disrespect you. Setting a boundary to protect your self-esteem and mental peace comes across as a strong message to others.

6/6

“I’m not comfortable continuing this conversation right now" and walk away

One of the healthiest psychological strategies is knowing when to walk away. If the disrespect continues despite your calm efforts, it’s perfectly okay to say, “I’m not comfortable continuing this conversation right now,” and remove yourself. Disengaging isn’t weakness—it’s emotional intelligence. Psychology calls this “boundary reinforcement.” It protects your mental health and sends a clear signal that you won’t tolerate toxic behaviour.
