Significance of the weapons of Maa Durga

Durga Puja is celebrated all over our country with different traditions and rituals. This year too the festival has brought joy and excitement in the lives of people. In Hindu mythology, Goddess Durga is a revered figure, embodying strength, grace, and boundless compassion. Each weapon that is held by Maa Durga holds a unique significance. Here is a list of the weapons known to Maa Durga and what it symbolises.

2/11

Trishul

At the heart of Maa Durga's weapons is the Trishul, a trident with three sharp edges. Legend has it that Lord Shiva gave this weapon upon her. The Trishul's three prongs represent the fundamental qualities of every living being on Earth – Tanmas (calmness), Satva (salvation), and Rajas (energy). Together, they symbolise a harmonious balance within the human soul.

3/11

Sword

The Sword, a symbol of sharp intellect and wisdom, was presented to Maa Durga by Lord Ganesh. Its blade signifies the brilliance of knowledge, while its sharpness represents wisdom. Essentially, a sword represents the combination of incomprehension and intellect that triumphs over negativity.

4/11

Spear

Agni Dev, the God of fire, granted the Spear to Maa Durga. This weapon symbolises fiery power and the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. It stands as a testament to the Goddess's commitment to righteousness.

5/11

Axe

Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect, provided Maa Durga with an Axe. The Axe represents fearlessness in the face of adversity, the power to both destroy and create. With it, the Goddess faces evil without hesitation.

6/11

Bow and arrow

Vayu Dev, the God of air, gave Durga the Bow and Arrow. The Arrow signifies the ability to take swift actions, while the Bow represents the potential to focus and achieve everything. Together, they epitomise the balance of power and potential within us all.

7/11

Lotus

A Lotus, a gift from Lord Brahma, symbolises the blossoming of spiritual consciousness in the face of life's trials and tribulations. Just as a lotus rises from the muddy waters to bloom in pristine beauty, our spiritual awareness can flourish even in greatest life challenges.

8/11

Sudarshan Chakra

The mighty Sudarshan Chakra was granted to Maa Durga by Lord Vishnu. This divine weapon represents the Goddess as the epicentre of creation, with the universe revolving around her. It spins on her index finger, a testament to the righteous order she upholds.

9/11

Shankh

Varuna Dev gave Shankh to Maa Durga, symbolising determination, resolution, and absolute power. Like the resounding call of the Shankh, her resolve is unmistakable. It is also believed that the sound produced by Shankh has the power to eliminate all the negative energy.

10/11

Thunderbolt/ Vajra

The Thunderbolt, or Vajra, is a representation of a determined spirit and supreme power. Maa Durga imbues her devotees with the strength to face challenges head-on.

11/11

Snake

The divine Snake, a symbol of consciousness and the male energy of Lord Shiva, is a reminder of the transformation from the lowest state of consciousness to a higher state. It represents the ever-evolving nature of existence.
