Royal families around the world are known for their luxurious lifestyles and powerful privileges. Apart from that, they are also bound by strict rules and are required to follow restrictive protocols that may or may not seem pleasing to the public eye. However, when it comes to matters of love and romance, the royals are much like us and believe in listening to their hearts rather than following protocols. Chance meetings, spontaneous romantic settings and love at first sight are all part of royal love stories around the world. Here are 7 royal couples who met by chance and tied the knot.

King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson

One of the most celebrated yet infamous royal love stories is that of King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. It is what drove the King to abdicate his throne and change an entire line of British succession. However, the royal couple had met under peculiar circumstances, whereby Simpson was the friend of the future King's mistress, who had asked her to tend to him during a weekend. Over time, their chance meetings became a regular thing, leading to the blossoming of their love affair.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana

At the time when Prince Charles met Princess Diana for the first time, he was dating her elder sister, Sarah Spencer. Two years after their first meeting, they met again at a party and were engaged just over six months later, which was followed by their matrimonial ceremony in 1981. However, they separated in 1992, soon after the breakdown of their relationship became public knowledge.

King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Silvia Sommerlath

In June 1976, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Silvia Sommerlath were married to one another, four years after a chance meeting at the Olympics. At that time, Silvia Sommerlath was working as an interpreter and host at the 1972 Olympics, where she met Carl XVI, something that was so spontaneous, it was what we may call 'love at first sight'.

King Felipe VI of Spain and Queen Letizia

Queen Letizia was a journalist before she married King Felipe VI and became the Queen of spain. During one of her assignments as a journalist, where she was reporting an oil slick on the shoreline of Galicia, she came across the King, who had also visited the same place to offer his support to the victims. The royal couple got married in 2004 and are now parents to two beautiful girls.

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Mary Donaldson met at a pub in Sydney. At the time, the Prince had visited the town for the 2000 Olympics. They got married in the year 2004 and are blessed with four children.

Known to be a glamour model and reality television contestant, Princess Sofia had a fairy tale moment when she met Prince Carl Philip of Sweden at a luncheon thrown by their mutual friends. Reportedly, it was 'love at first sight' for the royal couple.

Talk about chance meetings and King Abdullah bin Al-Hussein and Queen Rania of Jordan have their own tale to tell. The royal couple met at a dinner party hosted by the King's sister. At the time, Rania worked for Apple in Amman. Following the meeting, two months later, the two were engaged.
