At-home brewing becomes a design statement

Coffee has become an essential part of the morning routine, and it is now shaping how homes are designed. According to interior experts, there is a clear rise in dedicated café corners across both luxury and mid-range homes. Interior designer Kritika Gosmany Malik says, “A well-designed coffee space isn’t a feature—it’s a feeling. It’s where design quietly becomes part of your everyday life.”
According to a recent report by The Economic Times (ET), affluent Indians are spending lakhs on artisanal coffee machines. Selling around 20,000 units a year, these premium machines are now statement pieces, driven by rising café culture and a desire for superior coffee.
Speaking about this shift, Arth Kumar, principal designer of an interior design studio, says, “In high-end spaces, built-in coffee systems are gaining preference as they integrate seamlessly into the design, keeping the space clean and sophisticated.”
A visible style element in modern kitchens
Coffee machines are no longer hidden in cabinets; they are now a visible design element in modern kitchens. “Very intentionally,” exclaims Kritika Gosmany Malik, founder of House of December. She adds, “Coffee machines have moved from being hidden appliances to becoming design objects. They represent a daily ritual—a moment of pause—and today’s homes are increasingly designed around these micro-experiences.”
Arth Kumar, founder of Shreem Interior Designs, adds, “I have also had clients request entire units designed around their coffee setup, where the machine itself becomes a visual highlight due to its colour and form.”

Homeowners are asking for dedicated coffee stations
Experts note that homeowners are increasingly asking for dedicated coffee stations while designing their interiors. “Clients aren’t asking for just a ‘corner’; they’re asking for a designed experience. We’re seeing kitchens evolve into zoned environments, and the coffee station has become a key layer within that—especially around hosting, slow living, and everyday luxury,” says Kritika.
Payal Uppal, founder and design head at Kei by Payal, says, “Premium coffee machines work well in both luxury kitchens and cosy nooks. In open kitchens or studio apartments, they also add to the overall look. Styles like Scandinavian, industrial, or modern minimalist kitchens suit them best, as the machine becomes part of the design story.”

- The Indian coffee machine market is estimated at ₹250–300 crore, growing at over 15% each year
- Around 4.2–4.5 lakh units were sold last year, up from about 1.8 lakh units in 2019

Styling appliances the right way
Speaking about the design approach during installation, Arth adds, “It depends on the design language. In most cases, integration creates a more premium look. But with certain machines, especially statement pieces, allowing them to stand out against a neutral backdrop can add character without overwhelming the space.”
Imran Khan, concept designer at The Gold Leafing Studio, says, “Keep the styling minimal so the coffee machine remains the hero of the space. Avoid placing it on high storage lofts or merging it into crockery displays. Instead, elevate the corner with wooden trays, planters, and subtle décor accents to create a stylish focal point within the kitchen.”
Experts say creating a clutter-free and well-planned setup is key to a good coffee corner design. “It’s important to keep the space clutter-free. Use built-in units or shutters to hide excess elements and place appliances thoughtfully so everything looks intentional. Matching finishes and adding under-cabinet lighting or spotlights can help balance function with aesthetics,” says Payal.
