6 grand Indian forts built on clifftops with epic views

India’s forts were never just about walls and cannons. Many were built in jaw-dropping locations where rulers could keep an eye on both their enemies and the scenery. Perched high on cliffs, these forts today offer not only epic stories of courage, but also sweeping views that will leave you feeling like royalty, and also leave you in awe. Here, we take you to some of the country’s most stunning forts in India that offer jaw-dropping views like no other.

2/7

Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur, Rajasthan

A fort that can overwhelm any kind of visitor with its grand architecture. Rising 400 feet above the Blue City of Jodhpur, this 15th-century fort built by Rao Jodha is as intimidating as it is beautiful. Its thick walls, intricate palaces, and lattice windows give it the required elegance, which hasn’t seen to fade after so many centuries. From the ramparts, you get a panoramic sweep of Jodhpur and the desert beyond. No wonder Rudyard Kipling once called it “the work of giants.”

3/7

Sinhagad Fort, Pune, Maharashtra

Sinhagad, literally “Fort of the Lion,” is less about dainty beauty and more about rugged grit. Sitting atop a steep cliff in the Sahyadris, this fort is famous for the 1670 battle where Tanaji Malusare, a general of Shivaji, fought bravely till his last breath. Today, trekkers huff and puff their way up for sweeping valley views and piping hot “pithla-bhakri” (local comfort food) served at the top. It’s definitely one of the must visit places in Maharashtra.

4/7

Chittorgarh Fort, Rajasthan

Sprawled across a 590-foot hill, Chittorgarh is the largest fort in India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s not just a fort, but can be compared to a saga etched in stone, of Rani Padmini’s legendary beauty, Alauddin Khilji’s obsession, and the heroic act of jauhar (self-immolation). The seven massive gates, towering Vijay Stambh (Victory Tower), and palaces perched above the plains make it not just grand, but hauntingly haunting. From the top, you don’t just see landscapes, you see history whispering across the wind.

5/7

Daulatabad Fort, Aurangabad, Maharashtra

Many might not have heard about it, but it deserves all the mention. Built atop a 200-meter-high conical hill, it’s a maze of tricky entryways, false passages, and a pitch-dark tunnel designed to confuse enemies. Once the capital of Muhammad bin Tughlaq, Daulatabad offers views of green valleys and basalt hills. Scaling it feels like being a part of a historic escape room, where finding the way is the real fun.

6/7

Gingee Fort, Tamil Nadu

Dubbed the “Troy of the East” by the British, Gingee Fort sprawls across three rocky hills in Villupuram district. Its citadel, granaries, and temples are scattered dramatically on cliffs, making it look like nature and architecture joined hands. Once guarded so fiercely that even the great Shivaji admired it, Gingee today rewards visitors with commanding views of the Tamil countryside. The climb is steep, but the vistas are epic enough to make you forget your sore legs.

7/7

Kumbhalgarh Fort, Rajasthan

Kumbhalgarh is famous not only for its cliff-top perch in the Aravallis but also for having the world’s second-longest continuous wall, 38 km of it, second only to the Great Wall of China! Built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century, it guarded the Mewar kingdom and even served as a refuge for young Udai Singh, founder of Udaipur. Today, from its hilltop bastions, you get sweeping views of rugged hills rolling into the horizon.
