6 hidden villages in Sikkim where you can go off the grid

Somewhere beyond the Instagram filters and cappuccino machines, Sikkim has some villages so remote that GPS also at times gives up. These are places where it might seem that the time has stopped, and the ambience so calm that you might pinch yourself to believe. If you have been craving to take a detour, wander off the beaten track, and ditch the usual places for a change, you are in for a surprise. Here, we have listed some of these places where time stands still—and where you would want to retire at some point of your life.

2/7

Dzongu

Tucked away like a well-kept secret, Dzongu is home to the indigenous Lepcha community. With wooden homes balanced on stilts and rivers that hum lullabies, Dzongu is a place where you might not get a Wi-Fi signal, but will have lots of butterflies to keep you grounded. Outsiders often find themselves debating deep topics with monks or playing impromptu flute duets with local kids. There are no notifications here, only the occasional goat headbutt to remind one of reality.

3/7

Lachen

High up in North Sikkim, Lachen is where scarves are mandatory and schedules optional. Locals speak softly, as if not to disturb the mountains. Yaks here have names, and a particular fondness for photobombing. Electricity flickers like a moody person, and yet, somehow, everything gets done. Visiting Lachen is like stepping into a snow globe that occasionally forgets to snow.

4/7

Zuluk Village

Zuluk has more twists than a season in crime drama. Famous for its 32-hairpin bends, it’s a village where car engines are tested and travelers are overwhelmed with surprises. Once a trade route between India and Tibet, Zuluk now trades in sunsets so dramatic they deserve a definite mention here. Internet signal? Only if the wind is generous and the mountain decides not to block it.

5/7

Yuksom

Once the capital of Sikkim, Yuksom has since chosen a quiet life, reminiscing about its royal past. Locals greet you like long-lost relatives, and even the dogs look philosophical. Ancient monasteries stand guard while moss quietly takes over unused paths. It's a place where the loudest sound is prayer flags flapping in the wind—or an accidental sneeze.

6/7

Uttarey

Uttarey is so modest, it almost forgets to tell you it exists. Hidden amidst forests and ridgelines, it’s the sort of place where clouds ask permission before settling. One can hike to nowhere in particular and still discover rare orchids, secret waterfalls, or a group of villagers playing flute under a tree, just because. The village doesn’t do drama—it does peace.

7/7

Borong

If relaxation were a place, it would be Borong. This village, known for its natural hot springs, specializes in long baths and longer naps. Birds sing lullabies, and locals brew tea that may or may not be enchanted. Travelers often forget what day it is—and nobody minds. Even the hills seem to be lounging.
So, for those who dream of vanishing—not out of despair, but delight—Sikkim’s hidden villages are calling. Just don’t expect cell service, but lots of soul service.
