6 markets that define the soul of Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is so much more than snow-capped mountains; it is also the lively buzz of its mountain markets. Shopping in and around Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj is like participating in a pilgrimage to a spiritual place. While the material objects you buy are excellent, their linkage to the Tibetan culture and the rustic charm of the Himachal region make each market a one-of-a-kind place to explore.
From the peaceful tranquillity of the Tibetan Handicrafts Cooperative Centre to the eclectic vibe of ‘Hippie Village’ in Dharamkot, these markets provide you with more than just a souvenir; they provide you with a look into a beautiful cultural tapestry. Whether you're looking for beautiful Thangka paintings, fragrant Kangra tea, or custom-made turquoise jewellery, six different markets epitomise the true essence of these stunning hills. Explore this visual journey through Himachal Pradesh's most exciting marketplaces, discovering hidden treasures tucked away in every charming mountain corner.

Kotwali Bazaar

Kotwali Bazaar, located on the lower side of Dharamshala, is the meeting point where Pahari (local) culture meets the culture of Tibetans. It is a busy commercial centre with everything you will need, such as daily essentials and nice pieces of Kangra tea. It has shared with the visitor the everyday life of the people from Himachal Pradesh in a grounded and authentic manner.
Speciality: Authentic Kangra Tea, local spices, and traditional Himachali 'Topis' (caps).
Timings: 9:00 AM – 8:30 PM.
Location: Lower Dharamshala, near the main bus stand.

St. John Church Road Market

The beautiful, historic neo-Gothic St. John in the Wilderness church is located along the beautiful scenic route, and it is a peaceful and pine-scented environment with very few people in this market area who wish to purchase high-quality winter wear or beautifully designed woollen stoles while enjoying the cool shade of the Deodar trees.
Speciality: Premium Pashmina stoles, heavy woollen coats, and knitwear.
Timings: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM.
Location: Road connecting McLeod Ganj to Forsyth Ganj.

4/7

Jogiwara Road Market

Walking off the square of the marketplace, you will find yourself on Jogiwara Road; it's a narrow, winding street lined with shops that have undiscovered treasures. The atmosphere is much quieter and more laid back than the main market, giving you a much more personal shopping experience. Here you will find lots of unique jewellery, as well as many interesting types of handmade beadwork, most of which are located in little basement shops that are fun to explore.
Speciality: Semi-precious stone jewellery, beaded necklaces, and customised Tibetan trinkets.
Timings: 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM.
Location: Jogiwara Road, leading down toward the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives

5/7

Dharamkot Market

Dharamkot is known as the 'Hippie Village' of Himachal. The market is filled with lots of energy, and you will find that it has a very bohemian atmosphere; in fact, it stands in stark, bohemian contrast to the bustling hubs below. The market is made up of many cool, trendy cafes, as well as a lot of shops selling crystals and other organic products. The marketplace truly embodies the spiritual, alternative lifestyle that is sought by many international backpackers and trekkers.
Speciality: Healing crystals, hemp bags, boho-chic clothing, and handmade organic soaps.
Timings: 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM.
Location: Upper Dharamkot, above McLeod Ganj.

6/7

McLeod Ganj Main Market

Often called ‘Little Lhasa,’ this marketplace is a sensory explosion. The colours and scents are overwhelming as the sound of prayer wheels and the voices of fellow travellers and monks fill the air. The market is the best place to shop for spiritual gifts, as well as enjoy a variety of delicious Tibetan street food.
Speciality: Singing bowls, prayer flags, Buddha statues, and delicious hot Momos.
Timings: 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM.

Location: Main Square, McLeod Ganj.

7/7

Tibetan Handicrafts Cooperative Centre

This centre serves as a living repository of Tibetan heritage. It is dedicated to preserving the traditional arts and crafts within the culture of the Tibetan people, including showcasing the creation and making of authentic hand-knotted carpets, as well as creating and preserving the exquisite Thangka paintings. The centre is where you can see how the artisan weavers of authentic Tibetan carpets are using their skills and creativity to continue an age-old tradition that is part of the Himalayan heritage.
Speciality: Hand-knotted woollen carpets, traditional Thangkas, and authentic Tibetan shawls.
Timings: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM (Closed on Sundays).
Location: Jogiwara Road, McLeod Ganj.
