6 UNESCO monuments you missed to notice on Indian rupee notes; Red Fort, Ellora Caves and more

We carry Indian currency notes in your wallet but how many of us have actually noticed what's printed on each note besides the numbers? Well today we are going to tell you about how these currency notes offer a glimpse into India’s rich history.

From the historic Red Fort in Delhi to the ancient Rani-ki-vav in Gujarat, our currency celebrates some of the country’s most iconic heritage sites and monuments, reflecting pride and legacy. Let’s have a look:

2/7

₹500 note - Red Fort, Delhi

Another UNESCO Heritage site to feature on Indian currency is the Red Fort in Delhi. It is the best place to get a glimpse into the Mughal past. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan, it was the main residence of the Mughal rulers for nearly 200 years. Every Independence Day, the Prime Minister hoists the national flag from its ramparts. The picture of Red Fort can be seen on the ₹500 note.

3/7

₹200 note - Sanchi Stupa, Madhya Pradesh

Built by Ashoka, the Sanchi Stupa in Madhya Pradesh is among the oldest stone structures in India. It is an important Buddhist monument, which features beautiful gateways carved with stories from the life of Buddha. It is of great historical importance as it makes for a prime Buddhist pilgrimage and tourist site. The ₹200 shows its image, honoring India’s Buddhist legacy.

4/7

₹100 note - Rani ki Vav, Gujarat

Rani Ki Vav is one one of the most gorgeous and ancient stepwells in Patan, Gujarat. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, this place is an architectural wonder built during the Solanki dynasty. It was constructed for King Bhimdev I by his Queen Udayamati. The stepwell is famous for its intricate carvings of deities and mythological figures. Its depiction on the ₹100 note reflects the beauty of ancient Indian craftsmanship.

5/7

₹50 note - Hampi, Karnataka

Hampi in Karnataka is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. The place is all about majestic ruins, old temples, and stone chariots. It is one of the most favorite attractions for history and architecture lovers. The iconic stone chariot from the Vittala Temple is depicted on the ₹50 note.

6/7

₹20 note - Ellora Caves, Maharashtra

The Ellora Caves in Maharashtra are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These ancient caves are noted for their stunning rock-cut temples and Hindu idols. They also feature Buddhist, and Jain monuments and the most famous temple here is the Kailasa Temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this is unique because the temple is carved from a single rock. The image of Ellora Cave is displayed on the ₹20 note.

7/7

₹10 note - Sun Temple, Konark, Odisha

The Sun Temple at Konark, Odisha, is designed in the shape of a colossal chariot of the Sun God. Built in the 13th century, it features 24 intricately carved wheels and stone horses. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of Kalinga architecture. Though partially in ruins, it remains a symbol of Odisha’s cultural pride. The ₹10 note displays this temple, reminding people of India’s artistic brilliance.
