7 breathtaking waterfalls surrounded by lush Western Ghats

The Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are known for their mist-covered forests, rich biodiversity, and rugged terrain that bursts to life during the monsoon. Among their many wonders are waterfalls that cascade dramatically through dense greenery, creating scenes that are almost surreal to say the least. These cascades not showcase nature’s raw power for sure. From Goa to Kerala and Karnataka, the Ghats are dotted with falls that are at their most spectacular between June and September. Here are seven breathtaking waterfalls surrounded by these ancient forests.

2/8

Dudhsagar Falls (Goa)

A four-tiered waterfall on the Mahadayi River in Goa within the Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary. The name of this waterfall translates to 'Sea of Milk'. This stunning waterfall forms the crest of a crescent-shaped valley and is surrounded by scenic views like pristine forests. This fall also stands among the highest waterfalls found in India and measures 310 m in height. The falls are most spectacular during the monsoon, and they are accessible through regulated forest and railway gates.

3/8

Jog Falls (Karnataka)

The second-highest plunge waterfall, which is formed by the Sharavati River. The river water divides into four distinct waterfalls like Raja, Rani, Roarer, and Rocket. This falls largely relies on the season and rain to turn into a plunge falls. It is covered with dense forest and also a significant site of hydropower. Hikers can trek to the falls by descending 1,400 steps to the foot of the falls to see the beauty and nature in its prime. The ideal time to visit the falls is from August to December.

4/8

Thusharagiri Waterfalls (Kerala)

Two streams originated in the Western Ghats confluence here to become the Chalippuzha River here. The waterfall is primarily recognized as a well-known trek location, which also offers scope for rock climbing and wildlife sighting. The waterfall is encircled by thick forests and also vibrant biodiversity, and thus it is an ideal choice for people who love a combination of nature, adventure, and relaxation.

5/8

Hebbe Falls (Karnataka)

Situated within the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve. The fall plunges in two stages: one is Dodda Hebbe (big) and Chikka Hebbe (small). This waterfall is situated amidst coffee plantations and forests and can be reached either by a trek or by choosing a jeep ride in the woods. The tourists can also swim at the foot of this waterfall except during the monsoon period.

6/8

Meenmutty Falls (Kerala)

The Wayanad district's biggest waterfall that falls from three levels and is placed deep within the woods. The waterfall is surrounded by vast tea plantations, and one needs to trek through these to be able to reach the fall, hence it is a much cherished memory. One must totally avoid coming here in the time of heavy rains.

7/8

Athirappilly Falls (Kerala)

Also referred to as "The Niagara of South India," it is the state's largest waterfall in the Sholayar ranges in Thrissur. The region surrounding the waterfall also consists of a lot of endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna. This waterfall has also been featured in a lot of Malayalam movies and other regional language films of India. This region is the sole location of the Western Ghats with four vulnerable hornbill species.

8/8

Vajrapoha Falls (Karnataka)

This fall is situated in the Belagavi district of Karnataka and passes through unspoilt forests and rocky outcrops. The Vajrapoha Falls are created by the Mandovi River, or the Mahadayi River.
