Either way, the world’s largest snake by weight and girth is every bit as fascinating as it is fearsome. Native to the dense, murky wetlands and rivers of South America, the green anaconda (Eunectes murinus) is known for being a master of stealth, often lurking just beneath the surface. If you are brave enough, here are some of the best places in the world where you can (safely!) try your luck at seeing anacondas in their natural habitat.

Let’s start with the obvious. The Amazon is prime anaconda territory, especially in the swampy areas around the Amazon River. Green anacondas thrive in slow-moving rivers, flooded forests, and marshes. Many wildlife tours depart from Manaus, the capital of Brazil’s Amazonas state. Often overshadowed by the Amazon, the Los Llanos region of Venezuela is a vast tropical grassland that offers unbeatable opportunities to spot anacondas.
