CSMT is more than just a bustling railway station in Mumbai—it’s a historic landmark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a symbol of Mumbai city’s rich heritage. The architecture is mesmerising, and one can’t simply get enough of this landmark on one single visit. This iconic railway station has seen good days, bad days, and some terrifying days as well. But yet, it stands strong and proud, for all to take a moment to admire its architectural splendor and soak in its vibrant energy. Let’s take a look at some of the fun facts:

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

In 2004, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding Victorian Gothic architecture blended with a touch of Indian designs. Its intricate design makes it one of the finest examples of colonial-era architecture in the world. It is also one of the most photogenic UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world. The site is one of the most recognised sites in India.

Architectural marvel by Frederick William Stevens

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus was designed by British architect Frederick William Stevens. Its construction was completed in 1888, nearly a decade after construction began. The railway station is a blend of Victorian Gothic elements with Indian motifs. The station’s domes, arches, and minarets reflect Mughal and Rajasthani influences, while the stained glass, pointed arches, and gargoyles showcase Gothic Revival elements. Overall, a very interesting blend.

Named after a Maratha legend

The station was originally called Victoria Terminus to honor Queen Victoria. However, the station was renamed in 1996 to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, paying tribute to the 17th-century Maratha warrior king who founded the Maratha Empire.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus witnessed several significant historical events, including the infamous 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, where it was one of the main targets. Tragedy came and went but the railway station, now all restored, continued to stand as a symbol of Mumbai’s resilience.
