The winters of Delhi are generally associated with fog, dull colours, and the ubiquitous pace of activities. But this winter, Delhi is experiencing winter differently. From the 27th of December, the New Delhi Municipal Council has started the plantation of more than 2.6 lakh tulips in Lutyens’ Delhi, triggering a brief yet colourful seasonal shift. This seasonal shift has been announced by NDMC Vice Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal, and it signifies more than the regular civic body makeovers.
Delhi is consciously transforming itself into a winter wonderland and urging its citizens to stop and appreciate.
Lutyens’ Delhi set to transform into a vibrant winter tulip trail during peak winter
The plantation drive is currently taking place in one of the most beautiful and historic areas of the capital: Lutyens’ Delhi. This already offers conducive conditions for taking walks during the winter because of its wide roads, colonial buildings, and green areas. With the tulips being planted around the roundabouts, parks, central verges, and around important religious sites, the area is gradually being turned into a long flower trail. It provides tourists with the chance to experience Delhi not merely through its monuments but through colours that beat to the rhythm of the change of seasons.
Tulips are more than flowers; they are an event that takes place in a particular season.
This particular event that takes place in winter, in the form of blooming, takes place in January and February, and this creates a certain eagerness in people because of its limited nature. Unlike flowers that bloom over time, tulips bloom at the same time, thereby turning drab winter into a colourful sight in a short period of time.
Tulips, temples, and city life: Winter garden in Delhi’s daily rhythm
This winter garden is being developed with the help of imported tulip bulbs from the Netherlands, which is considered the benchmark globally for tulip bulb growth. As of now, 5.17 lakh Dutch bulbs have already been imported to Delhi during the current season itself. Out of these, 3.25 lakh bulbs have been allocated to the NDMC, and the remaining 1.92 lakh bulbs have been allocated to the Delhi Development Authority. Perspective-wise, this development of winter gardens with imported bulbs brings the entire globe together because it links the winter scenario of Delhi to the renowned tulip gardens of Europe.
What sets this initiative apart is that it pays particular attention to places of worship and pedestrian areas. These are definitely part of the daily activities of the locals, as well as the itinerary of tourists. As the tulips start to unfurl, the temples, churches, as well as other public spaces around them, are supposed to have a festive look, as if it is a celebration. For the tourist, this is definitely a unique experience where spirituality, culture, and beauty come together in the city.
How a winter tulip trail could spark floral tourism in Delhi
Though the aim of the project includes environmental elements, the most prominent effect of the initiative is created in the experience of Delhi in the winter season. The tulip plants grow in a period when the environment is mostly devoid of foliage, adding a splash of colour in the drab setting. The change causes people to walk, to get picture-worthy material, and to experience the area in a slow way. For people like the above, the tulip-lined roads create a distinct look in the winter season of Delhi, when the city is normally fast-paced. Delhi has always been a climate-responsive city, but the concept of floral tourism never reached the same level as before this massive tulip cultivation project.
Now that the large-scale tulip cultivation process has begun, it is apparent that the city is looking to leverage the concept of seasonal travel experiences even within the boundaries of the same city. The concept of the tulip trail this winter could turn into a prominent annual experience. As December is about to meet its end, the bulbs are below the ground, waiting for their turn to bloom in early 2026. By January, when the tulips bloom, they will bring to the city not just a decorative hue but an experience as well. Amid a year that has long witnessed the prevalence of greys around it in the winter season of the national capital, Delhi is now ready to bloom.
