World’s most powerful passports 2026: 38 countries that dominate the top 10, and where India ranks

For many travellers, the true weight of a passport is felt not at home, but at an immigration counter thousands of kilometres away. It determines whether a journey begins with excitement or paperwork, freedom or formalities. As international travel rebounds and borders grow busier, the difference between a strong passport and a weak one has never been more visible.
The Henley Passport Index, the world’s longest-standing passport ranking, has unveiled its 2026 list, mapping global mobility in clear numbers. The index ranks passports based on how many destinations their holders can access without securing a visa in advance.
A passport is ranked based on travel freedom, with the number of destinations a holder can access without a visa (or with a visa-on-arrival/ETA) an indicator of its strength. Higher numbers correlate with lower embassy visits, costs and flexibility to travel at a moment’s notice. For professionals, it means smoother cross-border travel and quicker access to global markets. Here are the countries that secured the top positions.

2/12

Rank 1: Singapore - 192 destinations

For the third consecutive year, Singapore secures the first place, which grants visa-free access to its citizens to 192 out of the 227 destinations. Robust foreign relations, political stability and world confidence form the strong roots of its power.

3/12

Rank 2: Japan & South Korea - 188 destinations

Japan and South Korea both share the second spot allowing visa-free access to 188 destinations. Their passports boast long years of stable diplomacy, economic stability, and strong bilateral relations, which makes it particularly valuable for the business travellers or students with international aspirations.

4/12

Rank 3: Denmark, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden & Switzerland - 186 destinations

Sharing the third position are five European countries — Denmark, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. They have very strong governance systems, economic stability and large proportions of visa-free travel through major visa-waiver frameworks such as Schengen.

5/12

Rank 4: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland the Netherlands, Italy, and Norway - 185 destinations

The fourth place is shared by nine countries, which include France, Germany and Netherlands. Citizens from these countries get access to 185 destinations. Since they belong to this bloc, they share policies of border-control and travel facilitation across Europe.

6/12

Rank 5: Hungary, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia & UAE - 184 destinations

In fifth place are four European countries as well as the United Arab Emirates. The UAE has seen a bigger jump since 2006, gaining 149 visa-free routes and jumping up by a massive 57 places, and is now ahead of Western countries, such as the UK, US and Australia.

7/12

Rank 6: Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Malta, New Zealand & Poland - 183 destinations

Sixth place is held by a group of nations from Europe and Oceania. Their passport strength are a result of regional collaborations, reasonable foreign policies and strong international relationships.

8/12

Rank 7: Australia, Latvia, United Kingdom & Liechtenstein - 182 destinations

Seventh is a tie between Australia and the United Kingdom, perpetuating global reach and massive visa-waiver agreements despite disruption.

9/12

Rank 8: Canada, Iceland & Lithuania - 181 destinations

In eighth place are Canada, Iceland and Lithuania which have easy access in Europe, the Americas and some parts of Asia.

10/12

Rank 9: Malaysia - 180 destinations

And in ninth place is Malaysia, which boasts one of the strongest passports from Asia due to strong regional affiliations and increased global confidence.

11/12

Rank 10: United States - 179 destinations

The United States falls in at 10, offering visa-free access to 179 locations —still a powerhouse, but no longer at the top spots.

12/12

Where India stands

India is on 80th position in the 2026 index, alongside Algeria and Niger, with access to 55 destinations — which highlights a sharp mobility gap that still dictates how freely citizens from various countries can travel the world.
