From one-horned rhino to Bengal tiger, 5 animals to look out for in Assam’s Orang National Park

Orang National Park is a lesser-known gem in Northeast India which is set along the banks of the Brahmaputra River. The park, also known as Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park, is among best-kept wildlife secrets in India which often gets overshadowed by its more famous cousins like Kaziranga National Park.
This small yet biologically rich paradise has gained attention for its conservation success stories and unique landscape.

On this note, let's have a look at five common wildlife residents of Orang.

2/6

Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros

Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros are the jewel of Assam. Your trip to Orang is complete without spotting the park’s most beautiful and iconic creature—the Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros. Orang is home to a healthy population of these prehistoric-looking creatures, which once teetered on the brink of extinction.

3/6

Royal Bengal Tiger

Yes, this small park also harbours the king of the jungle. The Royal Bengal Tiger, India’s national animal, prowls the forests and grasslands of Orang, though sightings are rare and often demand patience. The park was declared a tiger reserve in 2016, and camera traps have confirmed its presence.

4/6

Hog Deer

Often seen darting through the tall elephant grass, the Hog Deer is another species that thrives in Orang. With their distinctive low posture and swift movements, they’re both shy and photogenic. These deer play a crucial role in the park’s ecosystem and are a common sight during early morning safaris.

5/6

Bengal Florican

A special mention must be made for bird lovers — especially those keen on rare species. The Bengal Florican, a critically endangered bird, finds refuge in Orang’s grasslands. With its black-and-white plumage and unique courtship display, this ground-dwelling bird is a highlight for any birder visiting the region.

6/6

Asian Elephant

Assam is an elephant destination, and Orang National Park just offer you the chance of witnessing these grand animals in close proximity. Asian Elephants are frequently spotted here, either wandering solo or in herds. These gentle giants can often be seen feeding on bamboo groves, bathing in water bodies, or crossing safari tracks — often blocking traffic in the most majestic way possible.
