Elections 2014: Gopal Shetty of BJP defeats Sanjay Nirupam by 3.8 lakh votes
MUMBAI: Gopal Shetty of BJP won the Mumbai North seat with a whopping margin of 3.8 lakh votes, defeating nearest rival and sitting MP Sanjay Nirupam of the Congress.
The constituency is dominated by Gujaratis and north Indians, and comprises of Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivali (East), Charkop and Malad (West) in suburban Mumbai. The MNS did not contest the seat in keeping with its policy of not opposing BJP candidates.
Last year, Nirupam had won by just over 5,000 votes benefiting from a split in anti-Congress votes between BJP and MNS.

Nirupam, whose defeat has come in as a surprise, was banking on his connect with grassroot party workers and voters in the last five years.
