6 hands-on jobs surprisingly safe from AI, according to Anthropic’s report

6 jobs that safe from AI: Anthropic report

In the past few years, artificial intelligence (AI) has not only transformed the way we work but also changed the future of it. And if you’ve been doom-scrolling through headlines about AI taking over most jobs, it’s time to take a deep breath. A report from Anthropic, released just this month (March 2026), has finally put some data behind the anxiety—and revealed the jobs which are least likely to be affected by AI.

While "digital natives" and "spreadsheet wizards" are starting to feel the heat of AI, the Anthropic report reveals that a solid 30% of the workforce is currently sitting in a "Zero Exposure" zone. In other words, if your job requires you to navigate the messy, unpredictable, and physical real world, you aren’t just safe; you’re indispensable.

2/6

The jobs most affected by AI

Anthropic’s study introduced a new metric called "Observed Exposure." Instead of just guessing what AI could do, they looked at what people are actually using AI for in their daily workflows.

The verdict? Large Language Models (LLMs) are geniuses at moving pixels, but they’re absolute failures at moving pipes. About a third of all roles—primarily in agriculture, construction, and food service—showed zero measurable AI exposure. This means: AI can write a sonnet about a broken engine, but it can’t pick up a wrench to fix it.

3/6

The six jobs least likely to be affected by AI

The report specifically highlighted six roles that are practically "bot-proof" right now:

1. Cooks: Between the chaos of a dinner rush and the need for purchasing seasonings, AI can't improvise in a kitchen.

2. Motorcycle Mechanics: Diagnosing a weird rattle in an engine requires knowledge and intuition that sensors haven't mastered yet.

3. Lifeguards: Scanning a crowded, sun-drenched pool and making a split-second save involves human eyes and high-stakes physical bravery.

4. Bartenders: Beyond mixing a drink, bartending is "social alchemy." A bartender needs to read the room, cut someone off, or sometimes provide a listening ear to customers-- something AI can't do.

5. Dishwashers: It sounds simple, but dodging high-pressure sprays and scrubbing irregular surfaces is something robots can't do at the moment.

6. Dressing Room Attendants: Providing personalised styling advice requires a level of human trust that AI can't provide.

4/6

Why the 'suits' are sweating

On the flip side, the report confirms that the more "digital" your job is, the more exposed you are. The data shows that computer programmers face a staggering 75% exposure rate, followed closely by data entry keyers (67%) and financial analysts.

Interestingly, the report flipped the old "automation replaces blue-collar" narrative on its head. Today’s AI-exposed workers are more likely to be:

Highly Educated: Graduate degree holders are nearly four times more likely to be in high-exposure roles.

Higher Paid: The average "exposed" worker earns 47% more than those in the "Zero Exposure" physical trades.

Entry-Level Strugglers: Hiring for the 22–25 age group in exposed fields has dropped by 14% since late 2022. Companies aren't necessarily firing the veterans; they're just closing the door on the juniors.

"AI is far from reaching its theoretical capability. Actual coverage remains a fraction of what's feasible, mostly because the real world is much messier than a digital prompt." - Anthropic Research, March 2026

5/6

The "Human Moat": Empathy and Iimprovisation

The reason these "hands-on" jobs are safe isn't just because robots are expensive; it's because human environments are chaotic.

Real-world mess: Sensors lag in steam, grease, and rain.

Human touch: We crave empathy. We don't want an AI to tell us our mother’s surgery went well; we want a nurse to hold our hand.

The "Vibe" check: Whether it’s a plumber troubleshooting a non-standard pipe or a teacher managing a classroom of rowdy toddlers, these roles require hands-on fixes that no script survives.

6/6

How to future-proof your career

You don't need to quit your office job and become a welder (unless you want to!), but you do need to hybridize. The winners of the next decade will be "Hybrid Hustlers"—the chef who uses AI to optimize food costs but keeps the "soul" in the menu, or the mechanic who uses AI diagnostics to find a problem faster but uses their hands to solve it.
