Mansa Devi Mandir: The sacred Shakti Peeth where dreams come true

Mansa Devi temple is a holy Shakti Peetha located at the peak of Bilwa Parvat in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. It is believed that this Shaktipeeth holds the power to manifest dreams and wishes through the boundless Sankalpa Siddha shakti of Goddess Manasa. Every year devotees from across the country frequent this sacred shrine of Goddess Mansa with hopes and dreams. A unique tradition associated with this temple revolves around tying a sacred thread to the branches of the 'Snohi' tree found within the temple premises. It is believed that the Goddess grants the wishes of those who perform this ritual with pure devotion. Here’s all you need to know about this unique Shaktipeeth.

How does this holy temple grant wishes?

Devotees from across the country visit this temple and tie a sacred yellow-red thread, which is known as “mundari or manak ka dhaga” at her sanctum post taking a sankalpa (vow) and mantra jap. It is believed that tying the thread along with chanting this mantra, "Om Aim Hreem Kleem Mansa Devyai Namah," can help in seeking blessings. of the deity.

Surrender and wish fulfillment

It is believed that doing so symbolizes ego surrender to her serpent-taming compassion; as one of the Ashta Matrikas born from Shakti's divine play to help Shiva, with her four-armed form holding a damaru, trishul, and kamandalu, she channelizes Kundalini awakening through Ganga's proximity. It is further believed that this amplifies prana shakti during Navratri when her energy surges and leads to the fulfillment of wishes such as progeny, wealth, marriage, and healing. This is when pilgrims return to untie threads and offer coconuts/sindoor and perform mundan/havan to complete their karmic circuit. It is believed that Goddess Mansa's grace dissolves obstacles such as Nag Dosha through her maternal benevolence rooted in Kalika Purana.

When was Mansa Devi temple built?

The history of this temple dates back to the 18th century, and it is believed that this temple was built between 1811 and 1815 by King Gola Singh. According to the age-old legend, after the cosmic churning of the ocean Samudra Manthan, a few drops of divine nectar (amrit) accidentally fell on this site, sanctifying it forever. This is why the temple now houses two distinct idols of the goddess—one with three faces and five arms and another with eight arms. Goddess Mansa is depicted seated on a lotus and serpent, symbolizing fertility, protection, and wish fulfillment.

What is the mythological significance of the Mansa Devi temple?

According to the Skanda Purana, it was also believed that Mansa Devi is considered the tenth form of the Divine Shakti. As per the books of mythology, when the demon Mahishasura defeated the Gods, they prayed to the Goddess for protection. This is when she appeared and vanquished Mahishasura. The grateful gods worshipped her and requested that she continue fulfilling the heartfelt desires (Manasa) of her devotees in the Kali Yuga (the present era). It is also believed that after the battle, the Goddess rested near the peak of the Shivalik range, which was believed to be close to where the current temple stands. Her divine pause is said to have inspired the construction of the Mansa Devi Temple at its present location.
