Purnima is one of the most sacred day in Hindu religion and the day holds a great religious and spiritual significance among Hindus. People offer prayers to Lord Vishnu and deity Chandrama on this sacred day. There are 12 Purnima observances in a year and Purnima falls every month. According to Gregorian Calendar, the Purnima that falls in the month of January-February is celebrated as Magha Purnima.
Magha Purnima 2026: Puja Rituals
- People wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath. As Purnima day is considered as the most sacred day so often people visit Ganga ghats to take a holy dip in Ganga river.
- Take a sankalp of observing fast from dawn to dusk.
- Some people consume only fruits, some take one time meal depending on their ability.
- Fasting on Purnima day is believed to purify your body, mind and soul.
- People perform satyanarayan puja and katha on this auspicious day.
- Satyanarayan puja can be performed in afternoon and evening time also.
- Take a wooden plank and place an idol of Lord Satyanarayan along with Lord Ganesha and Shree Yantra.
- Light a diya with desi ghee and first perform puja to Lord Ganesha then invoke the idol of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi by chanting mantras associated with them.
- Offer flowers and bhog prasad such as panjeeri and panchamrit.
- Recite Vishnu Sahasranama, Satyanarayan vrat katha to see the divine blessings.
- Offer arghya to the deity Moon and seek the blessings.
- After completing all the rituals, devotees can break their fast and eat anything they want except onion, garlic and meat.
- You can utilise this day for the manifestation by doing meditation.
