Asian Boxing finalists to be main entries for CWG, Asian Games

NEW DELHI: In line with the nation’s medal hopes at the Glasgow Comonwealth Games and the Asian Games, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has spelt out a strict selection criteria focusing on the form, consistency and fitness of elite boxers.

The BFI has stated that the finalists at the forthcoming Asian championships in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from March 28-April 11 will be selected as India’s main entries for the CWG and Asiad.



The BFI is presently holding trials at NIS Patiala for the Asian championships, where the boxers are ranked for selection in the CWG and Asiad-approved weight divisions.

It’s been learnt that while the federation is following its evaluation for
-mat for selecting boxers, it has allowed the referees and judges (R&Js) to decide the outcomes of the bouts.

Earlier, it was the national coaches who would evaluate, award ranking points and select boxers for international competitions.

“Ranking evaluation will be done only in Olympic weights in the last week of Feb for 7-10 days. Rank 1 boxer will be selected as main entry for the Asian boxing championships and Rank 2 will be kept as reserve. Finalists at the Asian championships in Ulaanbaatar, in the CWG and Asiad weight categories will be selected as the main entry for the two multisport events,” read the BFI policy.
