Pakistan vs England highlights, T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8: Harry Brook's ton seals semifinal spot as England defeat Pakistan by 2 wickets

England vs Pakistan highlights, T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8: Skipper Harry Brook produced a captain’s knock of the highest quality, smashing a breathtaking century to guide England to a thrilling two-wicket win over Pakistan in a Super 8 clash of the T20 World Cup on Tuesday. The victory made England the first team to seal a place in the semifinals of the tournament.

Chasing 165 for victory, England rode on Brook’s magnificent 100 off just 51 balls, studded with 10 fours and four sixes, to overhaul the target in 19.1 overs. It was a knock of composure, power and timing, especially after England had been rocked early by Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The left-arm pacer struck with the very first ball of the innings, removing Philip Salt for a golden duck, and soon added the prized scalp of Jos Buttler. When Jacob Bethell also fell to Shaheen, England were reduced to 35/3 inside the Powerplay.

Brook, however, stood firm. Mixing calculated aggression with clever strike rotation, he rebuilt the innings almost single-handedly. He found support in Will Jacks, who chipped in with a valuable 28 off 23 balls, including two sixes. The pair added crucial runs in the middle overs to steady the chase.

Brook reached his fifty off just 28 deliveries and continued to dominate the Pakistan attack, taking on both pace and spin with equal authority. Even as wickets fell at the other end — Tom Banton and Sam Curran departing to Usman Tariq — Brook kept England in the hunt.

Shaheen returned to complete a fine spell of 4/30, dismissing Brook in the 17th over with England still needing 10 runs. But the damage had already been done. Despite late wickets from Mohammad Nawaz, England held their nerve, with Jofra Archer finishing the job with five balls to spare.

Earlier, Pakistan posted 164/9 after electing to bat. Sahibzada Farhan top-scored with a fluent 63 off 45 balls, hitting seven fours and two sixes. He shared a 46-run stand with Babar Azam (25) and added 49 with Fakhar Zaman (25) to lay a solid platform.

At 122/3 in the 16th over, Pakistan appeared set for a bigger total. However, England struck back superbly at the death. Liam Dawson was the pick of the bowlers with 3/24, while Jamie Overton (2/26) and Jofra Archer (2/32) also chipped in with key wickets. Pakistan lost six wickets for 52 runs in the final five overs, a collapse that ultimately proved costly.

Brook’s century placed him in elite company. He became only the fourth batter to score a hundred in a T20 World Cup chase, joining Alex Hales (116* vs Sri Lanka in 2014), Chris Gayle (100* vs England in 2016) and Pathum Nissanka (100* vs Australia in 2026). It was also the third-highest individual score for England in T20 World Cups, behind Hales’ 116* and Jos Buttler’s 101*.

With this win, England extended their dominant run against Pakistan in T20 World Cups, winning all four meetings. They have also won their last six T20Is against Pakistan.

The victory marked England’s fifth consecutive semifinal appearance in the T20 World Cup (2016-26), the most by any team in tournament history. On a night of high pressure and fluctuating fortunes, it was Brook’s brilliance that ultimately separated the sides and carried England into the final four.

Pakistan vs England Live Score: Overs 7–13 Summary
England tightened the screws in the middle phase with disciplined bowling and smart rotations. Adil Rashid set the tone with a tidy six-run over, applying immediate pressure with his variations. Liam Dawson followed up with another economical spell, keeping the scoring rate in check.

Jamie Overton then delivered a key breakthrough, removing Babar Azam for 25 to dent Pakistan’s rebuild. Fakhar Zaman attempted to shift momentum, taking on Will Jacks with back-to-back boundaries in his first over.

However, England maintained control overall, conceding just 45 runs in this passage. With wickets falling and the run rate dipping, Pakistan found themselves slightly on the back foot heading into the final stretch.

Pakistan vs England Live Score: Beauty from Adil Rashid!
What an eventful over from Adil Rashid, even though it began with a hiccup. England were penalised for not having enough fielders inside the circle, resulting in a no-ball that Farhan swept for a single. Crucially, Rashid ensured there was no damage off the ensuing free hit, tightening his lines immediately.

He then put Fakhar Zaman under real pressure with clever variations — a teasing googly outside off that drew a swing and miss, followed by slower leg-breaks that produced inside edges onto the pads. Fakhar struggled to read him as Rashid varied his flight and pace expertly. Just when it seemed like a perfect over, Farhan broke the shackles on the final ball, pulling one to deep square leg for four. Still, a probing, high-quality spell of wrist spin.

Adil Rashid was introduced into the attack and delivered a tidy first over, conceding just six runs as Pakistan moved to 61/2. He began with a legbreak that Babar Azam pushed back, before slipping one down the leg side for a wide.

Rashid quickly adjusted his line, varying his pace cleverly. Babar managed singles and a well-timed flick for two to deep square, while Farhan dragged a short ball to the leg side for one. The final delivery was full and drifting down leg, beating Farhan’s attempted flick and striking him on the pad. A controlled, probing start from Rashid.

A real moment of drama! Curran angles in an inswinger from around the wicket, landing it on a length around off. Babar Azam dabs it towards backward point and sets off. The fielder attacks the ball quickly and, spotting Babar briefly out of his crease, fires in a direct hit at the striker’s end.

But Babar reacts swiftly, stretching his bat inside the crease just before the stumps are broken. The throw then deflects away towards backward square leg, and with no proper backup in place, the batters scamper back for a second run.

Archer soon had the last laugh, removing Ayub with a sharp bouncer to dent Pakistan. Farhan kept the scoreboard ticking with two successive fours in Archer’s second over, showing positive intent.

Liam Dawson then made an immediate impact, as Salman Agha holed out in his first over. Babar Azam rounded off the phase with consecutive boundaries off Archer’s third over, ensuring Pakistan stayed in the contest despite the setbacks.

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat against England in their Super 8 clash of the T20 World Cup in Pallekele on Tuesday.

Pakistan made one change to their playing XI, bringing back left-arm seamer Shaheen Shah Afridi in place of all-rounder Faheem Ashraf. England, meanwhile, retained the same side.

Announcing the decision at the toss, Pakistan captain Salman Agha said, "We're going to bat first. It looks like a good pitch and we want to put up an above-par score and then try to defend it. It's our first game of the tournament here in Pallekele, but we've been playing most of our cricket in Colombo. Wherever you go, adjusting to conditions is key, and we've had to do that quickly after coming back just a couple of days ago. Having said that, conditions across Sri Lanka are generally similar, so we know what to expect today. From the rained-off game, Faheem misses out and Shaheen comes back into the side. We have a strong spin attack, but our fast bowling is just as good. Depending on the situation, I can go either way. This being my first ICC tournament as captain, it's obviously a responsibility, but I'm enjoying it and really looking forward to the challenge."

England skipper Harry Brook said his side would also have preferred to bat first. "We would have batted as well. It's a fresh pitch compared to what we played on a couple of days ago, so hopefully it's a bit better and gives us a good chance to chase later on. We're going in with the same team and there's a lot of confidence in the group. We know we can improve, but the results have been encouraging and we feel a big performance isn't far away. We've done our homework on the opposition, including the unorthodox options like Usman Tariq. There's plenty of footage and data available, so we're well prepared. If we win tonight, a semi-final spot is within reach, but T20 cricket can turn quickly. We'll focus on playing our best cricket and sticking to our processes."

Teams:

England: Philip Salt, Jos Buttler (wk), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Harry Brook (c), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Jamie Overton, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid.

Pakistan: Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Salman Agha (c), Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Usman Khan (wk), Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Shaheen Afridi, Salman Mirza, Usman Tariq.

Pitch report

66 and 67 metres square. It certainly looks a very good surface. It looks really, really good. A typical Pallekele wicket. England played on a couple of surfaces here the other day that were used and far more spin-friendly.

This one, though, is completely different. There's a full covering of grass, clearly unused, and it feels rock-hard underfoot.

Expect good pace, a bit of cut, and that familiar skiddy nature. Conditions like these often improve as the game goes on - it could well be a surface that gets better for batting later in the day.

England vs Pakistan Live Score: Will England's batters crack Usman Tariq code?
England have the tools — but whether they execute well against Usman Tariq is the real question.

Tariq’s strength lies in deception: his variations, subtle change of pace and that pronounced pause before release disrupt a batter’s rhythm.

On slower, gripping surfaces, he becomes even more dangerous because batters are forced to generate pace themselves.

Why England can counter him:

Spin depth in squad: England regularly face high-quality spin in franchise leagues and international cricket.

Multi-dimensional batting: Players like Jos Buttler, Harry Brook and Will Jacks are strong sweepers and use their feet well.

Tactical flexibility: England have shown they are willing to adapt, even if it means grinding out “ugly” wins.

Why Tariq could trouble them:

England have not consistently “caught fire” with the bat in this tournament.

They struggled at times against Sri Lanka’s slower bowlers.

If the pitch grips again, scoreboard pressure could magnify Tariq’s impact.

England vs Pakistan Live Score: England aim to spin their way to semi-finals
England may not have hit top gear at the T20 World Cup, but they will gladly take another “ugly” victory if it sends Harry Brook’s side into the semi-finals with a game to spare.

A dominant bowling display saw England dismiss Sri Lanka for 95 on Sunday, sealing a 51-run win to begin their Super Eights campaign on a strong note.

With the Pakistan-New Zealand fixture washed out, England now know that victory over Pakistan on Tuesday at the same venue will confirm their place in the last four. The 2010 and 2022 champions would then qualify with one match still to play.

England’s batting, however, continues to misfire. They were restricted to 146-9 by Sri Lanka, failing to fully capitalise on starts.

"We know that we can play a lot better," all-rounder Liam Dawson said after the match, with his comments released on Monday.

"But at the end of the day in tournament cricket, you just need to get the win, however ugly."

It was the third time in the tournament that England’s bowlers had bailed them out, having previously defended modest totals against Nepal and Italy.

"The fight we've shown with the ball shows that this team is in a very good place," Dawson added.

Pakistan bring a formidable spin unit of their own, headlined by mystery spinner Usman Tariq and his distinctive pause before release.

But Dawson believes England can counter that threat with their own spin depth. Alongside him and Adil Rashid, Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks provide further slow-bowling options. England also retain seam variety through Jofra Archer, Jamie Overton and Sam Curran.

That flexibility was evident on Sunday when Jacks opened the bowling with off-spin, claiming 3-22. Archer struck twice as Sri Lanka slumped to 34-5 inside the Powerplay.

Dawson highlighted the contrasting strengths within England’s spin group.

"We're all very different types of spinners. Jacksy gets very good over-spin, very good bounce.

"Dilly (wrist spinner Adil Rashid) has all these variations and me, I'm probably more of a defensive spinner and that's my role. I'm just trying to be consistent for the captain.

"Adil can use all of his tricks and he comes on to get wickets and get us back in games or put us ahead in games.

"Obviously, Jacks, he's been brilliant. He's exploited conditions here very well.

"And I think the way Brookie captained today was phenomenal, how he used us all differently."

However, Dawson warned that conditions for Tuesday’s night match could differ significantly from Sunday’s slow, tacky pitch that had been under covers after heavy rain in Kandy.

"Obviously, a different challenge on Tuesday at a night game. It could be a better wicket. We'll have to wait and see what happens."

England vs Pakistan Live Score: 'I don't look at stats' - Sahibzada Farhan
Sahibzada Farhan has made it clear that personal milestones are not on his mind at the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup, insisting his focus remains on contributing to the team’s success.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Pakistan’s clash against England on Tuesday, Farhan was asked about Virat Kohli’s record of 319 runs — the highest tally in a single T20 World Cup — and whether he had similar targets in mind.

"If you ask me personally, I don't look at the stats, I don't look at records. Even when I perform, people tell me that I have hit so many sixes, played so many strikes, and scored so many runs. So I don't look at the stats. The important thing is that you have to take risks in T20. If you take the pressure of breaking records, the same records are broken; they are made to break. So it is not my focus, but I will try to finish at the top. And for Pakistan, it will be beneficial for Pakistan and Pakistan's name will be made known," Farhan said.

Kohli amassed 319 runs during the 2024 edition of the tournament, averaging 106.33 across six matches with four half-centuries — the highest aggregate in the event’s history.

Farhan, meanwhile, has scored 220 runs in the 2026 edition so far and has at least two matches left to play. The right-hander currently leads the run-scoring charts, registering one half-century and one century in five matches at an average of 73.33.

When asked about taking on England’s pace spearhead Jofra Archer, Farhan sounded unfazed and brushed aside suggestions that the fast bowler poses a significant threat.

"No, it's not a big deal to face Jofra Archer. We have already faced him in Pakistan. We have good bowlers; they also bowl at 145. So it's not a big deal. Yes, as you said, they will definitely have planned it, but I have also planned it. It's not that only he will have plans. So, we will see. It will be a good match," Farhan said.

Pakistan’s Super 8 opener against New Zealand was washed out in Colombo due to rain. The Men in Green will now take on England on February 24 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

"Obviously they're a very good team with some dangerous players and Tariq's obviously a very good bowler. I'm sure the boys will do their homework... You know, it's not all about Tariq. I think they've got a very well-rounded team as well. So we're not going to just look at him, we'll look at the whole team and see how we can nullify them"

England vs Pakistan Live Score: 'England are in a very good place'
England all-rounder Liam Dawson said on Monday that the team is “in a very good place” despite an inconsistent group-stage run in the T20 World Cup, and welcomed the strength of England’s spin options heading into the business end of the tournament.

England progressed to the Super 8s after a tense phase that included a 30-run defeat to West Indies and close wins over Nepal and Scotland. They responded strongly in their first Super 8s fixture, beating Sri Lanka convincingly, and now prepare to face Pakistan on Tuesday.

"The fight we've shown with the ball (against Sri Lanka) shows that this team is in a very good place," Dawson said ahead of the Pakistan clash.

After being limited to 146/9, England produced a clinical bowling performance to dismiss Sri Lanka for 95 and secure a 51-run victory. Spinners claimed seven of the 10 wickets, with Will Jacks returning 3/22 in four overs, while Adil Rashid and Dawson took two wickets each.

"We're all very different types of spinners. Jacksy gets a lot of overspin and a lot of bounce. Dilly (Rashid) has all his variations. Me - I sort of don't get the bounce that the other two get.

"It will be a different challenge on Tuesday night (against Pakistan). We might get a better batting wicket. We'll have to see," Dawson said.

"The beauty of this ground (Pallekele) is that you can bowl whenever and be versatile. We've got four good spinners, with (Jacob) Bethell. And we've exploited conditions here in the past. If it's a lot better wicket on Tuesday, we might need different plans and to work differently.

"We're all very experienced. If you look at the amount of cricket that me and Adil have played, even Jacks as well, it's probably only with Beth that's probably got a little bit less experience."

Dawson also made it clear that England are preparing for the entire Pakistan line-up and not focusing solely on mystery spinner Usman Tariq. Pakistan also have options such as Shadab Khan, Abrar Ahmed, Saim Ayub, Salman Agha and Mohammad Nawaz.

"It's not all about Tariq. They're a very good team with some dangerous players and Tariq's obviously a very good bowler.

"But we're not going to just look at him. We'll look at the whole team and see how we can nullify them."

While England may not have dominated the tournament so far, Dawson stressed that results matter most in knockout-style cricket.

"Of course, we know that we can play a lot better than we've played, but at the end of the day in tournament cricket you just need to get the win. However ugly it looks," he said.

"I think we were very good in the bilateral series here against Sri Lanka, where we played spin. We had a couple of tough games potentially, but we won.

"And then, on the day we know that we can bat a lot better than what we batted, but we've won games and that's the main thing."

England vs Pakistan Live Score: 'England are just not going to look at Usman Tariq'
England left-arm spinner Liam Dawson said the two-time champions will not be distracted by the hype surrounding Pakistan's mystery spinner Usman Tariq ahead of Tuesday's crunch T20 World Cup Super Eights clash, adding that the visitors are prepared for the full range of their opposition’s spin arsenal.

England secured a 51-run victory over co-hosts Sri Lanka, and a win over Pakistan would guarantee them a top-two finish in their Super Eights group and a place in the semifinals. But concerns linger over England's top-order vulnerability to spin, with four of their top five falling to Sri Lankan spinners in Sunday’s clash - a worrying sign ahead of a Pakistan side that boasts Tariq, Shadab Khan, Abrar Ahmed, Saim Ayub, Salman Agha and Mohammad Nawaz.

Tariq has been the tournament's most talked-about spinner, especially due to the exaggerated pause he takes before releasing his off-breaks. England captain Harry Brook has even been spotted mimicking Tariq's unorthodox action in the nets. But Dawson, a seasoned campaigner in limited-overs cricket, said the focus must remain broader than one man.

“It’s not all about Tariq. They’re a very good team with some dangerous players, and Tariq’s obviously a very good bowler. But we’re not going to just look at him. We’ll look at the whole team and see how we can nullify them,” Dawson told reporters on the eve of the clash.

Dawson, along with Will Jacks and Adil Rashid, shared seven wickets between themselves as Sri Lanka were bundled out for 95 in response to England’s 146/9. He added that variety in England’s spin bowling line-up has been key to their success so far.

"We're all very different types of spinners. Jacksy gets a lot of overspin and a lot of bounce. Dilly (Rashid) has all his variations. Me - I sort of don't get the bounce that the other two get. It will be a different challenge on Tuesday night. We might get a better batting wicket. We'll have to see."

“Out of the three or four of us, I’m probably more the defensive spinner in this, and I know that’s my role, and I’m just trying to be consistent for the captain. Adil can use all his tricks, and he comes on us to get the wickets and get us back in games or put us ahead in games.

“We’re all very experienced. If you look at the amount of cricket that me and Adil have played, even Jacks as well, it’s probably only with Beth that’s probably got a little bit less experience. But there’s a lot of trust in the guys that go out there and try to execute what you want to try and do,” he added.

England vs Pakistan Live Score: Pakistan warn England of spin test
Pakistan have put England’s inconsistent batting unit on notice ahead of their Super Eights clash in the T20 World Cup, warning that a stern spin test awaits them.

Speaking on Monday, Pakistan batter Sahibzada Farhan pointed to England’s struggles against Sri Lanka’s slow bowlers, where they managed only 146-9.

Farhan said England should expect an even tougher challenge from Pakistan’s spin attack when the two sides meet at the same venue in Pallekele, Kandy, on Tuesday night.

Pakistan are under pressure to secure a victory after their opening Super Eights fixture against New Zealand was washed out.

A loss would confirm England’s place in the semi-finals with a game to spare, especially after they bowled out Sri Lanka for 95 to seal a 51-run win.

In that scenario, Pakistan would have to defeat Sri Lanka in their final Super Eights match and depend on other results to stay in contention for the last four.

"What we saw in the Sri Lanka-England game was that the ball was gripping and England struggled against spin," said the in-form opener Farhan on Monday.

"Sri Lanka have one or two spinners but we have five in all so we will give England a tough time on a pitch that looks good and will grip," said Farhan.

Pakistan’s spinners have claimed 26 wickets in four matches so far, compared to just seven by their pace bowlers.

History, however, is not in Pakistan’s favour, as they have yet to beat England in three previous T20 World Cup meetings.

"We are confident and our morale is high," said Farhan, who scored an unbeaten 100 against Namibia in Pakistan's final group match.

"We are focused on this match to win and progress."

Farhan, the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 220 runs, also expressed confidence about facing England’s fast bowler Jofra Archer.

"Facing Archer will not be difficult because I have faced similar bowlers in Pakistan," said Farhan.

"So if he has plans against me, I also have plans against him."

Pakistan are expected to strengthen their spin resources further by bringing in Abrar Ahmed in place of seam-bowling all-rounder Faheem Ashraf.

England, meanwhile, could stick with an unchanged XI for the fifth consecutive match, with Liam Dawson, Will Jacks, Adil Rashid and Jacob Bethell forming their spin options.

Sri Lanka and New Zealand are the other teams in the Super Eights group and will face off in Colombo on Wednesday.

The top two sides from the group will advance to the semi-finals.
